Flights to NYC questions.

It's not great but wouldn't call it unwatchable!

If you're on a Virgin flight that has the IFE that runs on a tape loop it's worse than the on demand ones.

The picture is very grainy.

The viewing angles are tiny, if the seat in front reclines there is very little adjustment to compensate.

VHS looks better.

I guess I have been completely spoiled by IPS displays, but the quality completely spoils the movie.

Perhaps this is on the Gatwick fleet or something. Can't remember it ever being anything other than totally watchable. Sure it's no 50" LCD but it doesnt spoil the film or anything.

No, the Heathrow fleet as well.

I'm probably just being overly picky and dramatic. ;)

I still fly Virgin most often due to the Miles + Money cheaper flights they offer.

At least they fixed the breakfasts, Jimmy Dean breakfast croissants even the smell was enough to make you sick.

I've been on those on Cathay, they suck lol

I loved Cathay's system when I went to HK (I'm guessing they put the look ones on shorter internal flights?), and the shell seats were great.

And press the call bell in the middle of the night and they make you cup noodles.

I've been on the loop ones from LHR to HK! They still have that (well, 3 years ago). Last 2 years has been the nice shell seats and yes, the noodles are great lol. They feed you a lot on Cathay, 2 meals in a 12 hour flight with noodles and nuts and drinks in between, i am constantly full on it.

I was recently on a Delta flight to JFK so here's a few observations you might find useful.

Their IFE is average, sound quality was poor but the screens are very watchable. You do get a selection of decent films and even a bit of music.
Leg room was fine for me and I'm 6'4".

Food was okay, 2 meals with drinks at select times.

As others have suggested, take a tablet with decent headphones and it'll trump the IFE.

The Virgin 747 i've been on was terrible for in flight entertainment, as POB stated VHS was better quality.

Service in economy was alright though, which made the flight a little easier to stand.

Depends on the plane, carrier and which class you fly really.

I never bother, I always just get the train. You are in Hereford right? Direct train to Paddington then hop Heathrow Connect (Not Express, Connect is HALF the price, uses the same line and only takes 10 minutes longer) direct to the terminal.

Or just take the tube, about an extra 15-20 mins and costs £3 each way after 9.30.

Although from Paddington there is a change at Earls Court so if you have a lot of luggage...

The Tube is totally **** for getting to Heathrow. It's not an extra 15 minutes at all, the tube from Paddington take over an HOUR! Connect takes 24 minutes..

Because most of the 747's have the **** old IFE on. The Heathrow based ones have the newer system.

the new Gatwick refits have awesome IFE, only 1 completed so far though

Aye but I don't think he's looking past economy? A Tablet is a good backup anyways.

Best bang for buck as they say.

I am not going to fly Business but i don't want to be bored for 7 hours. The money saved can go towards the food !!!

Anyone got any Go To/things To do in Atlanta? Apart from a shooting range :D (already on the list !)

I wouldn't pay for Business myself, the prices can be mad it's not worth the cost, Sometimes it's worth looking into a Premium Economy upgrade, in the past i've only paid a very small amount to upgrade but those have only been Manchester to Southampton flights, worth a look non the less.

It's also worth looking if anyone flys an A380 out of Heathrow to NYC.

Personal opinion I guess but I have found it great, although it is slightly less useful if you get in to Paddington anyway (coming in many other directions you'll find the Piccadilly line significantly easier as it may very well be less changes). Even with Paddington it's still only 50 minutes and connect varies form 25-31 minutes, so around 20 minutes extra each way saving you around £30 in all.
