Hey guys,

I am taking apart my old pc, its over 5 years old but some parts may be salvageable due to upgrades a few years back.

Its a Dell PC with no reference name on it.
The problem I am having is the case is riveted to the metal frame, there are no screws. Does anyone know how I can remove the outer case without damaging the interior?

Cheers

(Will upload pics soon)

Rivets generally have to be drilled out, then you can replace the rivets with nuts and bolts or thread the holes for screws.

Parts you can likely salvage are hard drive, CD/DVD drive, the rest is likely proprietary for Dell (so PSU, mobo). However if you are upgrading i doubt you want these anyway :p

Usually on a dell case there are little hooker on the side panel at the back which you pull
up then you slide the side panel off like normal.

Is that not the case?

No pun intended lol.

Probably being a dell you will have two push buttons, one each side of the case. You press them and slide the cover off. Forwards, I think.

andy.

I was looking at the Graphics, RAM, HDD and CD-RW as these were the latest updated parts.
Would there be another way to remove the case (maybe a hammmer??) since I dont have a drill on me

There will be a release catch to get into it, do that before smashing the thing up. Google the model number (it'll be there somewhere?) or let it boot, go into system properties - might say there.

What type of case is it. It wont all be riveted in believe me.

I cant ever recall coming accross a PC case dell or otherwise that was riveted sealed, is it one where the top of the case slides off with a lever at the back of the tower which allows the sides to then come off? i highly doubt it will need to be drilled or smashed to get into it lol

Both of them?

They'll be a similar release catch. You're suggest smashing it with a hammer, are you a moron?

Note: There is one weird catch thing on the back but I cannot find any others like it on the whole case

well it's clear from that picture that that panel comes off, you can see the split and the lack of rivets

Some parts of the case have been riveted!
And there is a release catch, just one and nothing comes off when I pull it/move it.
However the front panel looks like it comes off but again no release catch and it doesnt just slide off.

EDIT: You see all the nice bolts holding the case onto the backplate, well they are rivets mate.

Just push the side off. So with the cd drive facing you just use the flat of your hand to push away from you. It should go with some persuasion, you can use those 'dimples' in the case if you need to.

Disclaimer: *I may be talking cobblas*

See that plastic L shape in the right side of the back of the case? Pull that down, the side will pop off.

Rivets are rivets. Not 'nice bolts'.

Move the catch and slide the panel toward the back of the case. The front will (probably) pop off if you pull it from the bottom.
