So I recently purchased a budget Rig with 4gb of ram. Long story short one of the ram sticks turned up dead.

Going for a refund i've decided to up my ram, because, why not??

According to the box this MOBO accepts RAM speeds up to 1333, yet i have seen suggestions for people running 1600 speed RAM on this mobo.

Can someone please tell me if 1600 speed DDR3 is compatible with my motherboard, or if I truly am stuck with 1333.

Technically you would be able to, but what the specs mean is that the motherboard lacks the 8x memory divider required to run the RAM at 1600 speed with the default 200MHz HT ref clock. This means that you will need to set your HT ref to 250MHz to get the 1600 speed.

However, I would suggest that rather than do this, that you just run the ram at 1333. You can tighten the timings to 7,7,7,20 and that will be decent. The thing to remember is that running RAM at 1600 taxes the IMC of the processor which means you need to bump the CPU-NB (IMC) voltage by about 10%. This increases CPU heat dissipation and will hurt your overclock.

@Jonsmith

So you suggest picking up 8gb of 1333 RAM, and tighten the timings from 9,9,9,24 down to 7,7,7,20??

Well if you bought DDR3 1333 I'd be surprised if they timings went down that low. If you buy DDR3 1600 with 9 9 9 24 timings it should go down to CAS7 when at 1333. My OCZ platinum 1600 set does at least.

This is a good RAM kit: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-052-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

1600 at CAS8 latency, should work alright at 1333.
