Thinking of a long weekend in the lakes, Ambleside area. What places are must vists?

Only thing planned is doing wrynose pass and visting a few places I went to when I was about 10 (wast water, some slate mine (no idea where that is though)) grasmere park (Anyone know if they still have that funky swing thing?)

So what else is worth doing?

If you drive, do the passes (Kirkstone, hardknott and Honister) Honister should take you to the mine you speak of i think. Also, From Ambleside (my favourite lake districk town) go straight up the A591 to Keswick, stop at Dunmail rise and climb up, you should see some low flying aircraft practicing in the valley. Definitely visit Ullswater, the prettiest lake in the lakes, take a trip on one of the steamers and take a look at **** falls. it's really nice there.

Edit, the falls share the same name as OcUK competitor, but they are about 5 miles south of pooley bridge, just off the A592 and begin with A

I just got back from the lakes, stayed in Bowness.

I liked the walks in Grizedale Forest. Some nice long and nice short ones. Also good for cycling.

There is the motor museum close by if thats your kind of things too.

If you mean Aira Force waterfall i agree very nice place :)

Malham Cove is nice also.

I like Ambleside stay there whenever me and the Missus go. Last time we went she didn't take her waterproof saying "it will never rain" cue middle of nowhere it starting to pee down and her asking me for my waterproofs... I said no :D

Anyone done the steam train from Haverthwaite to Lakeside then got on a boat to Ambleside? I'm planning on doing this soon but by looking at the train and boat timetable we'll only have 2.5 hours in Ambleside. What can you do in that time? I was thinking grab a bite to eat and go on a walk, any specific areas to walk to in that area that have a nice scenic view?

If the weathers okay I'd recommend parking at glenridding steamer pier, taking the steamer to howtown, then walking back (take about 3 hours), not too strenuous as it's mostly on the lake side and has nice views. If you want food on that side of the pass the white lion in patterdale or the brothers water inn near hartsop would be my recommendations. The coffee shop and attached hotel-bar in glen ridding are nice if you want a snack or a warm.

Drive up hardknot pass
Walk around buttermere, finish off with lunch and a pint on one of the boozers bythe lake (there's 2 of them)
Have an evening out in Bowness, loads of good places to eat and drink
Go to Ullswater and treat your OH to lunch in Sharrowbay
Go to Ennerdale (my favourite lake and know it well having grew up 5 miles from it) and walk up anglers crag, then if adventurous carry on up crag fell
Sellafield visitors centre is quite intersting
Walk all the way up scafell pike
Generally relax and take in the scenary, theres loads to do and see, the pace is very slow, enjoy it. Can' wait until I move back ;-]
