Cheap Run around for long commute for 2 months

Mondeo. It won't be great on fuel but they are comfortable motorway cruisers. I used to do ~80 miles a day 5 days a week in a 1.8 petrol and it would go through a tank and a half. This was sitting around 100 most of the way

The TDCi model is much better on fuel but I wouldn't want to spend less than 2K on one due to potential moneypits, if you do get one go for the 6 speed gearbox.

Sadly it is A and B roads, I don't get near a motorway on my commute :(

Go on ebay and search the Cars category, max £1500, nearest first and work down the list.

Best way to solve these sorts of problems.

I'd be inclined towards diesel for 100 miles a day. A cheap Peugeot or Citroen HDi would be ideal, or a 1.9 TD. If it runs right and the clutch feels OK with no knocks or clunks then it will more than likely run for 2 months.

Cheap **** Rover 400 diesel, uses a canal barge engine but they're solid and trundle on for 300k and much more.

Uses mainly Civic parts too, so if it breaks it's pennies to fix. Plus it'll do 50mpg and still has 105bhp. I had one for 3 months and it saved me so much money, haha.

306 or 406 HDI, that kind of money should get a good one, and in a few months time it should be worth what you paid for it still.

If you get lucky you could even get a 406 Coupe in decent condition which look fabulous.

So you ask us about 1500 quid commuter cars and now you've decided you are tempted by a £4500 Peugeot convertible?!

The 307 is rubbish and the dealer warranty mostly worthless.

Might have posted my original post a bit too soon before I firmed up what I'm after. But yeah the commute is the top priority for the next few months, after that I guess it will just be my run-around that I need to live with or be able to get rid of to upgrade to a car I like.

Well only Mondeo from local dealers at an affordable price was £395 which seemed a bit dodgy low for me.

Other stuff took my fancy upto (approx) £3000 mark that I seen around local dealers was :-

Ford Mondeo £395
Rover 25 £1,095
Vauxhall Astra £1,295
Vauxhall Astra £1,599
Rover 75 £1,895
Rover 45 £1,995
MG ZS £1,995
Ford Focus £1,995
Vauxhall Omega £2,000
Audi A6 £2,000
Volswagen Passat £2,195
Volkswagen Passat £2,395
Rover 75 £2,495
Jaguar X-Type £2,599
Volkswagen Golf TDI £2,985
Mercedes Avant-Garde £2,995
Audi A3 £2,995
Volswagen Passat £2,995
Saab 9-3 £3,995

Appreciate some will be a bit ridiculous considering insurance and stuff, probs the Saab, A3, Merc and Jag - I just thought they looked kinda cool. The lower end is more realistic and normal. Any opinions on them?

Sorry fella but at this end of the market buying from dealer only has negative impact on your wallet. warranties are hardly worth anything unless the car is an absolute dog - that should be visible when you first see it anyway.
If you don't know much about cars then simply get something that is known to be boring/reliable. That means no 307 cabrio. Try to find a friend/relative that has a clue about cars and if that's not possible pick the most sensible looking one and pay the £150 for a RAC inspection to ensure it's not a complete lemon.

Could he go for ***** prestige at this price point, ok the chances of big bills are there, but over two months, OP might have a nice waft mobile with toys and luxury.
