As the title suggests the brother is looking for a new pc
budget is around £1000 give or take.

he already has a 27' monitor @ 1920x1200, keyboard, mouse and OS

He wants to get into gaming so a decent GPU,

an ssd for the OS along with a fast HDD

16GB ram

case he wants a stylish case with plenty of room possibly with a solid front cover that can accommodate a fan controller and maybe a side window but that's not a priority .

he wont be going dual graphics but extra pcie slots would be no harm

also would a sound card be recommended?

sorry for the long post

hit me with what you got.

thanks for the options guy i know hes not bothered with a blu-ray player

as for 16gb he said cause it wasnt to dear why not.

if he dropped the SSD what could be improved?

If i was spending £1000 on a gaming pc i would probably be spending around £300 on the graphics card so a Nvidia 670 or AMD 7870 or 7950 is where i would be looking.
This cooler is the king of budget coolers :D

If you drop the ssd then you get a better graphics card or case, I would certainly recommend getting a small ssd just for windows if he's not to fussed with putting his favourite games on there.

I agree with olivier and the Z9. I recommend that case a lot, you do get a lot for your money with it. Oliviers last spec has a SLI/Xfire capable mobo too but the PSU isn't man enough to power a second card.

This is the new king! Mark my word! :)

Get a 670, and drop SSD if you want to improve the case, PSU motherboard. 670 > 7850 + SSD imo, for a proper gaming rig.

But SSDs are great for OS and programs. However, if he fancies buying one later, they keep dropping in price, and he can invest in a Samsung 830 256GB. Great drive, great price (£150).

That's nice! I agree 16GB is silly and it's so easy and cheapish to add later if needed.

Think I prefer the corsair case i used earlier but I thought I'd throw this Phantom 410 out as a suggestion. The closed loop cooler is to show it's a watercooling case, you can use a cheaper aircooler if you so wish obviously.

Yeah, the 500R is good (I have one). It's not the quietest, but very well designed and engineered.

I have the Z9 plus for my HTPC. I can't really fault it, lots of features, lots of kit for a low price. Even the fans are good quality, I wouldn't call them noisey at all.

Originally it was a stop gap till I could decide on a "amp style" HTPC case to cough up for. I figured I could "write off" a £40 case, especially when i could reuse the 4 fans and it's P4/8 extension lead for the new case (that's probably £25 worth of bits right there!).

Suffice to say I'm very impressed with it and have kept using it. I'm tempted to mod it slightly, take the mesh off the side and install a window to stop the dust. Oh and lose the mesh blocking the fans intake/exhaust to improve flow and hopefully reduce noise as well.

I look forward to seeing what these guys settle on :)

Our 670 is cheaper and clocked at the same speed....you are paying more for nothing there.

You must be considering SLI to up the PSU. My SSD is a lil cheaper and has a better write speed.

The RAM is dear but im guessing you want it white? The DVD drive is also slow X22 and there is a cheaper alternative at that speed.

Overall, very good. Not sure how you managed to cram that into your budget (VAT?).

Any of the builds presented, (and yours with the little tweaks), will last for a good while. You have smaller capacity drives, but I doubt that will be a problem.

Basically, with a budget around £1000, you can only go one way. 3570K with a 670. The rest depends on personal tastes. The PSU you selected will do 670 SLI, the case is good, and the motherboard very good, as well as the cooler, although I think it is OTT. Watchout for clearance between the GPU and the Cooler. I would put the cooler in the second PCIE slot so it's not hovering a few millimieters above the GPU. But to be fair, I think that video card has a backplate, so no risks of the cooler touching the GPU and shorting things.
