I purchased a pre built system from a store in central london around 4 yeras agp and was looking to improve in the near future. I do not really follow the hardware side of things and would be mostly looking to do some gaming and maybe using it as a media hub.

So the few questions would be would a 4 year old case be capable of using current mid to high range compenents. The case is a cooler master cm 690. In an effort to get more bang for my buck i am thinking i have the case, monitor, keyboard mouse. So to bring the system up to date i would need a motherboard, ram, processor and gpu? Would these items fit within the case i have?

Can you post your current specs. And a budget for the upgrade.

Asus MB P5Q Turbo
Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHZ
4 gig RAM
Saphhire ATI 4850
Vista
Hyundai monitor
Onboard sound
700 gig HD.

I am thinking I can use the case, the Hard Drive, the optical drives, the monitor and keyboard and mous from the old system.

So a budget of £500 to improve the MB, ram, and GPU. Or would I be better taking the plunge and pushing the budget to £700 and get a prebuilt system supplied by OCuks. The most hardware work I have ever done is swap a couple of hard drives over and fit a new graphics card. The question I am toying with is it easier to pay a little extra for the piece of mind and have an expert put everything together?

Are the HDD and optical drive sata? If yes then reusing them makes a lot of sense.

Just to give you an idea. The i5K is overclockable, this Z77 mobo can dual card GPUs, the PSU can power two 7850s and is a very good price especially as it's modular. Building isn't really that difficult, it's balancing the build that is the hard part.

As long as you have a little patience and take your time there's no reason not to build your own rig.

Get a good quality screwdriver some tie raps and a pair of snips, your looking at anything from 1-4 hours to complete the build in a case that has already been populated in the past.

just one thing on the HDD with it being 4 years old is it Sata or ide?

Using the windows device manager it seems all the disk drives have ATA after them, would this be an older style?

SamsungHD753LJ ATA device

Well the model seems to indicate an older F1? That was SATA, so you should be alright for the HDD in your new build, that is of course if you want to keep it and it meets your needs?

You can double check by just taking off the panel and having a look at the HDD connectors to confirm if you're in 2 minds about it.

The same friend of a friend is willing to rip out the old parts and install these for a fee of £50?

I am always anxious when someone offers a service like this as I have no reference point for what is a fair price.
