Freezer has lots of ice in it - whats going on?

maybe you need to get your car and attach a string and then drive the car away, then remove the ice
Rinse and repeat

if its auto defrost, make sure the hole that the water is meant to go out isn't blocked. also, if you don't keep it semi full then it can cause it to freeze up quite bad (and is really uneconomical) also if its not level (or very close to) it can cause temp issues too. also check all seals.

Leaking door seal meaning moist air enters the freezer, the moisture condenses and then freezes inside the freezer. Probably.

There could be nothing wrong with it as such, as mentioed above, if you left it slightly ajar just once overnight then the ice will build up. Defrost it then start again and see if it happens again, if it does then you probably have a dodgy seal.

It's set at the highest setting (so highest temperature)
Usually the highest setting(/max) would mean the coldest temperature, not the highest temperature.

This often causes confusion amongst people who have fridges with settings 1-6 (for example). Where 6 is actually the coldest, NOT 1.

If you've made this same mistake it could certainly explain your problem.

Can one simply buy a new seal for the door? My freezer is similarly full of ice & I'd like to replace said seal. The landlord simply wont bother though- so where do I look to buy a new one and does it simply glue on?

Some push in, some are fixed to the door.

When my freezer filled with ice it was because the defrost element behind it had a broken wire, so no defrost so it was just filling with ice.

Also your landlord is legally obliged to see to all the inventoried goods and replace them within a reasonable time when they break.

£50 does seem a bit steep, I'll see what ebay has to offer.

Aye, the landlord is obliged to fix broken things. The problem is that the freezer hasn't packed up completely (yet), it's just working hard to create large amounts of ice. I don't think that's worth the hassle.
