Queens Club Tennis

You don't see it in any of the clips, but the ball girl runs down the line (I don't know if they switch ends or something) then realises what's happened and stops half way with a WTF look on her face.

Disgraceful behaviour from a sportsman. Words fail me, but that was pure idiocy. Doesn't deserve any money for that, nobody in their right mind would kick that "thing" because it was so close to a referee, even if it was rock solid.

Just a stupid, stupid act and his post match interview was pretty poor, blaming the ATP etc.

Ouch.

I read the article on BBC before watching the vid and assumed that it was the main advertising board round the edge he'd kicked and a bit had flown off the side and unfortunately hit the official. Still unacceptable but maybe just bad luck.

Watching the vid though, it's an absolute disgrace. From where he's kicked that little bit of extra boarding, there is no outcome possible other than it slamming into the poor bloke, it's basically all round his legs and only inches away. IMO he deserves more than just a DQ for that, he should be banned from the next ranking tournament as well.

Edit: Maybe even more than that... can you imagine if you were at work (lets assume office job), something goes wrong so you get frustrated, go up to the nearest desk and thrash your foot through it, injuring the person sat there. You'd probably be at risk of dismissal I'd imagine?

Even if he has a problem with the ATP, I don't see how it's this bloke's fault. When Andy was complaining about the conditions when he went out he didn't go over and boot an official.

I just can't comprehend what he was thinking when he did this.

Just seen it on BBC news, what an idiot. Will Nalbandian get a longer suspension from competition for this?

From what was reported on the BBC earlier about the response from ATP, then no, almost certainly nothing more than the DQ.

What an absolute tool, it's difficult to get context from a short video (assuming there is any) but I'm hoping he gets a large fine and banned for a substantial period of time for that - what appears to be an unprovoked assault might merit at least a year.

He must've thought it was a solid structure, was it possible to carry on with the game if the line judge had agreed to it or does the umpire just make the decision? seems pretty unfair on the fans.

Given that the thing that he kicked was so close to the umpire, even if it was solid, Nalbandian going up to it and kicking it, even resulting in no injury, would have looked just as bad.

She might have done something else daft but in post #12 you can see towards the end of the .gif that after Nalbandian has kicked the box she raises her arms as if she's about to throw him a ball as if nothing has happened.

Yeah exactly, she took the position she is supposed to take.
I thought the poster thought she was doing something else like raising her arms as though she's startled.

The incident was unfortunate as well as stupid. Of course he shouldn't have kicked that box but it wasn't intentional that the line judge would get hurt.

His apology was pathetic though. Having had plenty of time to think about what he might have to say and all he did was blame the ATP for putting players under pressure. He's under no more pressure than any other player and he didn't come across humble at all. He didn't even publicly apologise to the line judge which would have been the rightful gesture, neither did he give a decent apology to the crowd. He clearly felt it was the wrong decision to default the match but we all know it was the only outcome. I'm sure he'll get told what to say for a press conference but it just wasn't good enough, no matter how upset he was.
