What area do you think the next big breakthrough will be in?

It will almost certainly be in Energy......as that is the predominant area of concern globally, both for political and environmental reasons....

war (weapons, R&D and all that mumbo jumbo) is more important to any government.

then it's all the ways they have to control people.

and then it's what you said.

:p

our next big breakthrough would be to have a global disaster to wipe out around 50-75% of the population.

actually think about what we do next, and start (semi)fresh.

Forget about making weapons or who is the best, or who should rule who and concentrate on things that are actually worthwhile.

An efficient means of harnessing renewable energy. Currently, everything is generally rubbish.

And don't shout solar at me. They lose a lot of energy due to reflection.

Heads-up display in the car linked to Google Navigation. So when you look through your windscreen you see the big coloured arrows on the road itself... and a large flag when you reach your destination :D

Completely dangerous.

Completely safe.

But only if it works properly and is minimalist.

HUDs have been used for years in other areas and try provide a way of looking at lots of information whilst keeping an eyes on the road. Currently many use gps' which require you to divert your attention and your sight to anothe device, even for a short time only, but it's still more dangerous than a HUD.

Not really, it be like looking at road signs.

Wrong. Road signs are real objects in the physical world - you look at them, they pass by, your view is clear again. Something ON the windshield would obscure real objects in the physical world. It would also mean your eyes are constantly focussing on something close to you, i.e. looking at the glass of your windshield, rather than looking through the windshield and focussing on something 30 feet ahead of you, as you should be. It would play havoc with hazard detection in the real world. There's nothing wrong with small GPS screens in your car dash w/ voice-over technology.
