How to test acidity/alkalinity of my tap water?

Not true, M is molar which is related to concentration, not mol which relates the total number of particles.

1 mol of water is what you describe as weighing 18 grams, the units M and mol mean completely different things.

So it's a ratio? If you have a 0.8M solution, does that mean there's 0.8 moles of one thing to every 0.2 moles of water. I realize this kind of falls down because we're actually talking about water... :p

No it isn't a ratio, M = molar concentration of a substance = the number of moles per litre of solvent.

So a 0.8 M solution of X in water will contain 0.8 mols of X per 1 litre of water.

Hey look guys we all failed A level Chemistry too !

Just reading this brings back the memories of my first year college.

Then I remembered the happiness when I quit it and joined computing instead. Only did Chemistry because I someone suggested it's a interesting course

I came in here to post exactly this. "I was having a nice hot soapy shower when I was shocked to discover my skin felt soapy! It also felt hot! My water supply must be tainted somehow..."

If you spray it in the sunlight and see a rainbow DO NOT DRINK!
