I've decided on this mobo, partly because it includes WiFi but also because of Fan Xpert

My question is does it work with any fan? I keep on hearing about PWM fans and frankly have got no idea what these are?

Also, if anyone could recommend a pair of 120mm fans for a compact M-ATX case that would great. I keep hearing good things about Scythe GT AP-14's being a great balance of low noise and CFM.

I've got the same Mobo, It's good but don't use Asus suite for the over clocking do that via the BIOS.

To tackle your questions Wiki link Here:

Scroll down for PWM,

It's in summary a way for your computer to tell the fan to spin up or down depending on needs (I.e. temp)

Gentle Typhoons are very popular, but I found Cougar Vortex CF-V12HP (go for the HP ones if you DO look at cougar, they move more air) actually deliver more CFM than typhoons. Perhaps though are a touch noisier, but then I have reference GPU's so they drown out the entire system when gaming.

Thanks Azen I'll take a look at the Cougar's. Even if they are bright orange lol!

Pazz, remove the competitors name before you get in trouble with the mods. OC are looking at stocking them soon I believe.

About the same as GT's oh and there is a good youtube review of them which compares them to the GT's

I have the deluxe model of that board mate, so I guess same idea.

What I found is that my case fans didnt run at full speed like I wanted them too (you might want them at different speed), and the bios wouldnt set them at full speed either, I tried and tried in the bios but it wasnt having it, I even raised the question on this very forum, heres my link to my thread >> http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18414306

it basically shows that once I installed AISuite_II on windows and set the fans up the way I wanted them then that done the trick, so my guess is that somehow AISuite_II (fanExpert2) talks to the bios and makes the changes you want (as you can see in my thread), and then even after that if you want to uninstall the suite then you can and the settings stay the same in the bios, well it has and did for me and I can provide photo evidence of this if required mate, no probs.

So far asus havent even responded to my email about this and that was days ago, and they dont have telephone support for motherboards either, so on a scale of 0 to 10 for tech support on asus boards I can already give them "0" as they have not responded at all to my email apart from the initial auto email you get when you request support, shame on you asus :(

So yea, I guess you must do it through the suite, and its much easier that way too mate, then you can just uninstall the suite once the changes are made like I done, or at least thats what happend to me anyway, try it and let me know if it worked same for you eh ?? infact could someone/anyone else test this too so that at least we all know how this works as asus seem to be useless at replying etc. thanks ;)

Thanks! Totally forgot!

@scotslad

I'm not quite following your post. So installing the software fan xpert 2 allowed you to set the fans to their max? Surely everyone would want fan xpert installed and set up anyways?

From looking through the Asus website it's one of the most comprehensive tools for setting up fan speeds.

No/yes, exactly what I said in my post and my other thread mate, I couldnt get the case fans to ramp up to full speed nomatter what I done in bios, so I installed the suite (including fanExpert2) and set the fans to full speed, sure as can be they went to full speed, checked them on various software and also in bios and yes they were at full speed, but I dont like a lot of software hanging about, so I uninstalled the whole suite totally and as I said, the fans stayed at full speed like i wanted them too ;), I didnt think they would but they did, so now I am thinking asus have made these new boards and you control the fans in the bios using the suite in windows (seems strange but can be the only way it happened), and then if you wish you can uninstall the suite like I done and the settings stay the same as what they were fixed to using the suite, simple as that :D, well thats how it is on mines anyway, I am by now means an expert but I do know a fair bit man.

And still asus havent replied to my email and thats been about a week now, LOL, useless. lol.

Using PWM fans you can run multiple fans on a single mobo PWM socket by using Akasa or Gelid PWM splitter cable. Cable uses one fan as master rpm to motherboard, motherboard sends same PWM signal to fans and splitter uses molex power from PSU to power fans. I'm running 7 fans from CPU fan socket this way... the harder I use the computer the faster the fans run and everything is cool.. so cool.

So you've spent £200 on a relatively expensive, feature packed motherboard in the P8Z77 Deluxe but yet you're not using one of its main features in fan xpert 2?

Here's a section of a review on Anandtech regarding the P8Z77 Pro

Alongside the dual band WiFi, dual network controllers (one Intel, one Realtek), superior fan control and provision for a future Thunderbolt add-in card, we have the stalwarts of the ASUS arsenal, such as USB BIOS Flashback, Fan Xpert II, enhanced USB charging, USB 3.0 Boost, a well thought out BIOS and superior operating software.

Get it installed.

yes mate, not using any of those features yet, so dont need them, when I do I will though, lol ;)

Fan speed control is nice. You can set it up so fans are at low rpm when you are not working it hard and the ramp as load increases. This way it's quiet most of the time.

@Azen

How are the Cougars with fan xpert? Have you designed any custom rpm profiles?

My cougars replaced the stock h100 fans and made it push pull on the rad, since they are controlled by the h100 unit the Asus program cannot do anything to them. However on the lowest setting for the h100 I get cooler temps and less noise than stock.

I've got the case 140 a sharkoon 120 and the front 200mm of my haf X running through the software, I really found it useful having the sharkoon go through the software as that's a highspeed fan but with the software it's nicely scaled back until it needs to be.

No custom profiles yet, but I might do as the default warnings on 600 rpm's kick in for my 200mm and 140 as those both obviously run slower, so at some point I will build a profile for them.

Having siad that the auto tuning seems to have worked well (other than the speed warnings) so it's a maybe/ long term/when I can be bothered thing.

True, my apologies. Comment was a bitharsh. But I've advised him to re-install software.

Furthermore, he's semi-hijacked my thread.
