Hi there

I've got a problem on a new 7950. the GPU diode on idle is 70 degrees. This is not normal at all is it ? the VRM seems all right though at 35 degrees

I just tried a game for a few seconds and it rocketed at 90 degrees, so I just shut down the game, I'm scared !

What's happening ?

aida64 and msi afterburner, they showed the same thing

I have the msi radeon 7950 twin frozr. I've seen some review and it shouldn't get this high !

I should say, no overclock here, no nothing, just on idle.

Ouch!
My 7950 twin frozr ran at about 33 C idle and about 66 C in heaven, that was overvolted and overclocked. Usually about 56 C in games but I run at 60 hz with vsync.
I would take the cooler off and check it is mounted properly and has a good coat of thermal paste and then remount and do the r screws up really tight.

Check your warranty first before removing the cooler yourself. With most companies that will void it, and they would able to tell by any thread stripping, or maybe they have a 'no entry' sticker over a screw etcetc.

IMO you should RMA the card because it is faulty.

I don't have warranty as it was bought second hand

I thus followed the advice of changing the thermal paste. I was very surprised by how it had been done: basically all the paste was around the chip, but not on it !!!

I reput paste properly, remounted the card and now it's idling at 35 degrees, which is much better. I tried a game quickly (mass effect) and it's going up to 53 degrees so much more normal temperatures!
