Cameron has said the straightforward tax avoidance arrangements of Jimmy Carr are "morally wrong"; Osborne has described aggressive tax avoidance as "morally repugnant". Tax dodging by the Tory Deputy Chairman Michael Ashcroft, the Tory adviser Philip Green, Vodafone, Amazon, Boots, etc., etc., etc. is completely different and is absolutely fine, perhaps even an indication of their public spirited wealth creation.

Jimmy Carr has now apparently said that he made "a terrible error of judgement" over being a tax-dodging scumbag - "I'm no longer involved in it and will in future conduct my financial affairs much more responsibly. Apologies to everyone. Jimmy Carr." (BBC online).

Yeah, right

On a slightly more optimistic front, it may be that in desperation, Cameron and Osborne have finally realised that claiming "You are all in this together" whilst turning a blind eye to blatant tax-dodging is not doing their credibility or electoral chances any good.

Welcome to the real world, you pathetic rich kids

Would you avoid paying tax if you could?

Well, this thread wasn't predictable. TBH, I'm on the side of Jimmy Carr. I would spend as much as I must to HMRC and not a penny more. I'm not in the business of giving donations to the government.

wasn' the funny bit that jimmy carr called out corporations evil for tax dodging and then it was found he was tax dodging himself making him a hippo-crat

I liked the tweet by some comedian when someone on Twitter asked why everyone was acting as if Jimmy Carr had killed a baby. "Because babies die in underfunded hospital" was the reply.

Glad Carr has apologised, too late now for his position on the 10 o'clock show to be tenable though.

He's a comedian ffs, he doesn't owe anyone anything.

If I was making loads of money, enough that warranted having a personal accountant, I'd let them go about getting me the best deal possible. I wouldn't sit there and actively ensure it was happening, which is what the tax avoiding companies do.

What makes it even funnier for me is that it comes from MP's saying how morally wrong it is.

It's morally wrong how MP's act with the whole expenses fiasco.

GG Cameron.

I really don't blame Carr if I was earning such amounts of money I would do the morally wrong thing too.

To be honest, No. I don't think that I would ever get involved in these elaborate and clearly immoral tax dodging schemes under any circumstances but maybe that's just me; must be something to do with my background and upbringing or something.

I aim to please ;)

Yeah right.

This line of reasoning is crazy. He's paid the amount of tax he was required to.

We can't be angry at him for not paying more unless we believe government taxation levels should be higher for everyone. Put your petty jealousy aside, there's no moral argument here.

If the scheme is legal, then surely the blame ultimately lies with the government for not stamping it out sooner. Its entirely possible he had no idea what he was involved with. Maybe it was as simple a conversation as "cheaper taxes? Legal? Super!" and he never got any more details than that.

For some reason I really want to punch stockhausen in the face, however personal attacks are not allowed so I'll just leave this here:

lolstockhausen

Now, back in the real world, what's the problem? I bet he still pays more tax than your entire family combined even if it's proportionally less. The poor hating on the rich is crazy, they provide a lot more for us than you could possibly imagine in your ridiculous communist bubble.

Hmm, I feel like playing today...

Stockhausen, when you earn that much money, I'd like to see how much tax you're paying...

Oh wait....

Also, what makes it immoral? It's legal. Personally if I sent my kids to private school or paid for private healthcare, I don't see why I should have to pay the relevant area of tax.

I have more of an issue of the collective pot for tax and it's distribution by the government, more than whether anyone is actually paying tax.

You know, the problem I have with Stockhausen posts isn't the fact that he's trying to inform people of what's happening in the news (I can appreciate that), it's the fact that now we've asked him to put his opinion on stuff, rather than being RSSHausen, it just seems like he's trying to shove his completely biased opinion down your throat with whatever he writes...

I know, I know... Then why do you bother coming into the thread... For the naysayers, it's to see what everyone else has to say on the topic, although mostly, half the thread is Hausen bashing...
