What exactly are the laws on drinking in public in central London?

Have done some googling on the issue, but it still seems quite unclear.

Am I right in thinking that the power of a policeman is to ask someone to stop drinking, confiscate their booze, and then arrest them if they fail to comply?

Let's say someone is sitting on a bench on the street or in the park and drinking nothing more than a beer or two with a friend. How likely is it that a policeman would have an issue with this? From what I've read, the restrictions on drinking in public are there to prevent anti-social drinking and anti-social behaviour, so how much of a problem is it to have a beer with a friend?

Does it not depend on the local bylaws......here we have a no drinking alcohol bylaw in the city centre which is loosely enforced by the Police.

Unlikely to be confiscated or anything dude, unless you're being ridiculous.

The thing is, it's in Westminster, which is a controlled drinking zone. I don't want a criminal record or anything, so considering I'm not going to be acting like a nob, I'm hoping that if an officer takes issue with it, he/she will just ask us to stop?
