Any word on when 12.6 will be out officially?

They won't be, the next WHQL release will be a different driver version, they have moved to a similar system as Nvidia now, beta drivers with WHQL drivers as and when they feel like it.
 
The 12.4 drivers where poor, and the 12.6 drivers where poor too.

Using the 12.6 driver, skyrim was freezing on me when I was walking through doors.

Last week I finally upgraded my 5870 to a GTX 670, and I have not had a crash or freeze in skyrim since.

One of my mates has an HD5850 1GB and not had any major issues with Skyrim AFAIK and has played dozens of hours.
