hey all,
so I picked up a 28" Hanns G monitor today, replacing my 17" crt (only used that for around 3 weeks, had a 20" LCD before that died a death smoking and all sorts). I have sat here for 30 minutes and my eyes really hurt. im around 3 feet away from the screen, and I cannot get much further back than this.

I felt a bit giddy too.

I guess it takes getting used to, but what advice can people give?
thanks
stephen

I'd say wait and get used to it. When I updated to a 27 inch I was like wow wtf? Didn't get as bad side affects as you but it took time and after a while I got used to it. Now I will never go back to a 22 inch xD. I'm sitting arouNd 3-3.5 ft away from the screen.

ah right - thought that. just was feeling worried because it hurt my eyes and i felt a bit sick! hopefully I'll get used to it in a few days. im only on for a few hours a time, once every day or two, so hopefully won't knacker my eyes. lol.

cheers

Have a play with the settings too. Colour, brightness, contrast, refresh....all of them. all these have varying effects for different people, so have a play and see if changing anything helps. i know it took me a few weeks to set it up so i didnt suffer. i know some of the settings i tried used to be unusable. its all so they can put large numbers in the stats, even if some of the things destroy the human eye if viewed directly.

Might help to turn the brightness down and make sure the rest of the room is well lit too, staring into a light source (such as a monitor) can make your eyes bleed.

Yup definitely look at turning the brightness down a bit most monitors these days seem to come out the box with heavily ramped brightness and crazy dynamic contrast settings by default and especially if the ambient room lighting doesn't match the monitor well its very hard on the eyes.

I bought the 28" Hanns G two years ago to replace my old 22" Samsung. I've never suffered from headaches or been dizzy as a result of using the bigger screen. I sit just over 2ft away from mine. Hopefully you're not running it with its "out of the box" settings otherwise it will give you a tan :)

Follow the advice of the other people in this thread and tweak the settings to get the right brightness/contrast/colours to suit you.

Exactly this.

Another fact you have to consider is that most LCD's at low brightness are still brighter than any CRT at highest brightness. Especially if the CRT is old and faded.

I had the same thing on my Hanns G at first. You do get used to it but you could also play around with F.lux, a little programme that changes the colours at night a bit, made a big difference for me. Also make sure your room is well lit.

i had a 26" monitor once...hated it. too big sold it at a loss of £70 cos i was one day over the 7 days return and wasn't allowed to hand it back..........one day! : (( but anyway i found it just too big and couldn't see things at the edge of the screen 22" - 24" is the sweet spot i reckon. my advice if you still dont like it after 3 weeks. i'd send it back if you can.

Hi PaulW.

Please remove the image in your signature as it's 58.14kB in size.

If you wish to use a signature please ensure it complies with the forum rules.

You may use a signature (commonly used in email messages) in your posts. You can specify in your profile a signature to use at the bottom of your posts. When you post, there is an option to use your signature. A signature may contain one or more images but they must fit within a box with maximum dimensions of 400 x 75 pixels (width x height) and with a maximum (combined) file size of 20k. Images containing mostly very large words or animated .gifs will not be permitted. You may also add 1 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text directly above or underneath the image with no spaces inbetween image and text. If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels. If you want to turn the signature off in the future, you can come back and edit your post. If you have specified a signature in your profile, the box will be automatically ticked for you.

The forum Dons/Admins reserve the right to judge individual signatures, particularly those deemed to contain material of an adult or offensive nature. If the Dons/Admins think the signature is unsuitable for a family orientated forum, then it will be removed. If the user then replaces it without making changes, they will be suspended.

Maybe you have tunnel vision...:D

Well I sit 3 feet from the 30" monitor and to be honest I don't find it big at all. I've had 24" monitors for years and this seemed similar when I first got it and I've just adjusted to the text.

I sit 2ft away from my 30" screen and it's fine, you just need to make sure it's low enough that you aren't cranking your neck to see the top of the screen.

If your eyes are hurting and you feel giddy I would take a guess that your refresh rate needs adjusting. Make sure you are running the highest resolution possible (1920x1080?) at the highest refresh possible (60hz).

Drop the brightness and contrast down to 50% and see how you get on.

Refresh ratio was fixed when they stopped making CRT's ;)
CRT's flicker and it becomes noticable on low refreshrates. TFT's work differently and don't flash on and off but are always on/displaying something.

Most likely the lighting, OCUK does sell something to combat eye fatique. The Antec Soundscience Halo 6 LED Bias Lighting but it's not intended to be used with such large screens. But think about it, it's lights attached to the back of the monitor. It's not very hard to come up with a DIY solution.
