My brother is in need of a car, and since he has 6 points, and 22, there isn't really a lot of options that he has. He needs one for Monday so I've got tomorrow to get him one.

The 2.0L is out because it's another £700 to insure, actually anything over 2L is shockingly expensive to insure.

How reliable are the 1.8 engines in the mondeo and is there any other cars he should be looking at.

50 miles from Manchester should be a good area to search but can travel further if a good enough deal is out there.

Help me OCUK, you're my only hope.

EDIT: ive got errands to run, but will be back shortly

I'd go Mazda 626, there are 1.8 petrols but the 2ltr is more common

Reason - I bought one for my sister and it's on it's second MOT and nothing has broken, we paid £600 for it and it just keeps going, low insurance and generally not owned by idiots or cheapskates, also well specified.

Hi

thanks for the recommendation but he gave it a go, but insurance was at £2320. there's not a lot of 1.8 models available.

Insurance quotes are:
£1724 on a 2003 1.8 Mazda 6, car value is £1350.
£1411 on a 2002 1.7 Honda Civic, car value £1850
£1350 on a 2002 1.6 Ford Focus, car value is £1200
£1077 on a 2004 1.4 Citroen C3, car value £1700
£1540 on a 2005 1.8 Ford Mondeo, car value £1350

Looking at the prices of insurance and the cost of the vehicle which car should he buy so that he doesn't kill himself while commuting.

any other possible car rec's?

Manchester is possibly the worst place to insure a car let alone with six points, maybe he should be looking at small little rot boxes Fiesta / Yaris / Punto.

they cost around £1150 - £1250 to insure, and are worse cars to be in than the mondeo.

So how is the 1.8 engine? Seen some with 120K on the clock. if fully serviced is this good or bad?

They're alright as far as I know, have come across some that develop a really weird whine from the intake though - never managed to sus out what causes it as I've never bought one of these, doesn't seem to be. A major issue, definitely related to the intake somewhere .

I've got a mk2 1.8 mondeo with close to 200k on the clock, and it's still running strong. Mk3's can suffer from a rattle coming from one of pulleys iirc but other than that I'm not aware of general issues, also if a mk3 and it has the electric drivers seat, check it moves...

Well my 1.8 lunched itself at 90k :( I suspect it burned all it's oil but I don't know. So keep an eye on it!

The rattle is caused by an imbalance in the crank pulley, it causes the tensioner to go bad too, but it's not a major issue although costly enough to get fixed. I have it on my current one (TDCi) at the minute :( A major issue is the swirl flaps being ingested on older engines, have a google for that. It will ruin the engine. I've never heard it myself, but the engine is very tickey generally so it may be hard to make out.

A lot of people say the 1.8 is underpowered but although it will never win a race it was good enough for me.

I got 160K out of mine (51 plate) and it was my first car so it wasn't exactly treated carefully

My 1.8 was dead at less than 70k, just make sure you take two people to look at it so someone can check for smoke from the exhaust when revved, if it does then walk away there's plenty more!

Update

Picked up a newish, 2006, Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Zetec Climate for £2300. Insurance is reasonable at £1250.

That seems like a stupidly large amount of decent car for very little money.

Mileage?

98k with FSH, MOT and 6 months tax. Serviced twice in last month, once by the seller and once by the buyer.

Drives very well, cant tell the difference between it and the 1.8 tdci focus.
