Piracy - unbelievable figures.

Remember, some people will buy a game after 'testing' it via piracy. I don't support piracy, but that's the way it is. Each downloaded copy doesn't = a lost sale

I must admit that is how I used to do things. Now I just buy the game and be done with it.

If a game comes out that I'm not 100% sure about I tend to wait and see reviews and if I'm still not sure I wait until it comes on sale on steam !

OMG this is news to me, PC gaming is dying due to piracy !!

Is that sarcasm? The PC platform is slowly dying, you can't even deny that it is, tons of new IP's are deciding to go solely for the consoles. You can say the PC gets new IP's, and it does, but very rarely do we get AAA+ titles, and even the ones that we do get are usually horribly optimized, ugly console ports that are weighed down by despot DRM.

We have a few golden titles that are on PC only, but we are slowly losing them to consoles. How epic would Dragon's Dogma of been on PC? Yet instead it gets a horrible version on consoles that's restricted as hell and runs at 25fps.

What was Capcom's excuse?

“It’s just a bit difficult with the whole pawn system and the borrowing and lending,” said Capcom’s Hiroyuki Kobayashi, confirming in a CVG interview that the studio has “no plans” for a PC version.

The PC, of course, is famous for its inability to handle simple online interactions within videogames...

Yeah, Xbox Live and Playstation Network are definitely more capable in terms of servers and online coding, yarp.

Nope, Capcom just don't want to drop a good new IP into the seven seas. Yarr!

Piracy needs to exist for PC cause so many devs release crappy ports you need to try before you buy. I've saved so much money because of it and I do buy games that deserve my money.

The OP mentioned Portal 2. Was any one of the 2 million people who pirated it worried that Portal 2 would be a crappy port?

I admit defeat ;)

we'll call it a draw so you can live to fight another day mate :p

For me personally, PC gaming just keeps getting better and better. Infact, the PC indie and Modding scene is more vibrant than ever.

I feel before I continue I must say this about consoles, what they do they do very well and I have every console old gen and current gen laying around or up in my loft. I'm not a console hater, I just see through the garnish that covers nearly every generic 'AAA' that gets released.

Diablo series, Company of Heroes, Lotro, Aion, Football Manager, Counterstrike, Tribes, Total War, Warhammer DoW, anything Sid Meier, HoMM, ARMA, Guild Wars 1-2 etc etc

A very small selection of PC games all purchased and played to death, then repeated then left for a few months/years then dugout and played through again.

Piracy, it's not going away but the above selection of games are worthy of anyone's coin, but hey thats just my view.

Regarding Serious Sam 3 (which I'm playing atm), it's been quite heavily discounted considering it is less than a year old, £7.99 I think it cost me. Could explain why they are doing OK sales wise, also they had an interesting take on DRM, basically putting 'bugs' in the middle of the game to stop people progressing. I read a post on here from a guy who ended up buying the game because he liked it up until the point his mouse started going crazy.

wonder if the numbers are lower than before, cos like now ive got a huge game libary, plus titles seem to drop in price really quickly, piracy seems much less tempting.

bet the rate of got and played is even less than the average game on steam too

I agree with this. I swop between console and PC sometimes but i'd never say PC gaming is dying, never has and never will. I'll take an indie game over a AAA game anyday

There is still the issue of developers being too afraid of new IP's being released on PC, they'd rather release them on console so PC owners who have Xbox's and Playstation 3's have no real choice but to buy legit (pirating on consoles is a lot harder and a lot rarer).

Why do you think Gears 2 & 3, Halo Reach & 4 etc didn't come to PC despite their prequels being on here?

Random thought - I wonder what the cost of DRM is per unit on the games? I'd guess it's not excessive (probably in the £1-2 per unit range at most) but still - offer the game without the damn DRM and drop the price by the same amount.

I think most PC gamers of working age are happy to pony up the cash for a decent title. Other stuff might be a "try before you buy". I'm more than happy to support good software.

This is going to be ripe for abuse

Its not just console ports, Portal 2 was perceived as being quite short too, so people will pirate to see if theres enough 'game' for their money

Third party DRM won't be a per unit cost. A developer will pay a licence for it, yearly or a one off. Even if you had a few in house people look at it for a few months per game, it would be a tiny cost compared to the rest of the game, even less if you use the same system across multiple titles. I doubt it's even more than a few pence per copy.

Unfortunately publishers and stakeholders don't see it as a cost, they want it implemented to protect their intellectual property and "increase sales".

I lol'd at the PC gaming is dying comments, people have been saying that for years now.

In my opinion buying second hand is just as bad as illegally downloading a game, hence why game publishers, developers etc have been giving GAME such a hard time.

I'd love to see just how many console gamers buy second hand games.. you can bet its on par, probably even greater than PC illegal download figures.

People just like moaning about piracy, more specifically.. making PC gamers look like the bad guys.

Just tested that and I get this:

Much better block page. I wasn't aware this had happened, although it seems like somewhat of a good thing I guess.

Anyway, there are a few points to be made here, and most of them have already been made:

One pirated copy does not equal a lost sale.

Console piracy is very much a thing too.

But lets face it, consoles are harder to pirate on. They are.

Personally I have no sympathy for people who pirate games to "try" them. It doesn't work like that. You try it and... then what? You've probably played through it now and you aren't going to pay for it. Excuses.

The only type of piracy I don't really object to is abandonware and retro games. I don't get the feeling anyone gives a damn if I download a ROM for an old game such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_Dreamers simply because they'd never make any money out of it anyway. That isn't something I do of course, in fact, the above game is the only thing I've ever done that with, but I really don't see the problem with that, only that, so long as the game isn't available retail, it actually helps keep history and your franchise alive.

But again, piracy to "try out games" doesn't work. Piracy is piracy and everyone who goes and downloads a game from a torrent site like this is hurting the PC games industry in the long run, at least so long as publishers make up figures like these.

Developers could quite easily solve this by offering demos and I really don't know why they don't do that anymore. I'd say piracy is also a convenient excuse for developers - they just don't want to invest in a platform they see as dead and I don't blame them. The PC doesn't look attractive for big games and IPs at the moment.
