Are watches redundant?

I wear a watch because they are superior to phones for telling the time and they look great. Who wants to look at their smart phone at a meeting?

Telling the time with a phone is for people who have jobs where the diabolical 'smart causal' is acceptable.

Until the future where we all have a HUD built into our vision arrives, I shall continue to wear a watch.

Haven't used a watch since I was about 14, just use my phone instead.

That said my life isn't exactly high pressured so not knowing the time every instant doesn't exactly bother me.

Plus I have girly wrists so they look silly on me. :p

Tend to leave my watch at home these days. If i need the time i glance at work phone. if i cba ill look at the many clocks on the walls.

I stopped wearing a watch a few years ago when the battery ran out (again) and it costs £150 to replace. Felt weird at first, now it feels even weirder to wear one again.

Well one thing is for sure, there are more people carrying mobile phones than wear watches now.

Also I find it hilarious the people that state looking at their watch is more polite than checking mobile phones. You REALLY don't think people notice when you do that? :p

I (unfortunately) attend many meetings, high powered or daily ones and have yet not been to a single one where all members are not regularly checking their smart phones. Granted I work in the IT industry so I guess it is pretty much the norm as opposed to 60 - 70 year old bankers in leather arm chairs smoking cigars that probably don't know what a smart phone is.

I've always worn a watch and I probably always will. It's comfortable, it's accessible and it's very natural.

£150 for a battery?

Last time I got a battery changed in a watch it cost me £5. My Seiko battery is still going strong and I must have had the watch for over 6 years now.

Isnt a mobile just a glorified pocket watch for telling the time?

Last time I looked wrist watches made pocket watches mostly redundant.

I dont wear a watch, my phone is good enough for me.

I feel these days though a watch (and Im talking the big-name watches here) is a fashion/jewelry item first and a timepeice second. Think I stated the obvious there lol.

You can get a Casio digital for £10 that will last you 10 years and give reliable time. But hmmm......try finding someone wearing one :D. All I see are 10-ton Tag Heuers, Rolex, Omegas etc that seem to be trying too hard to be aircraft instrument panels. One my my mates doesnt even know what all the little needles do on his (and his watch has 5 mini-dials scattered about on the main face) & admitted he dropped £1000 odd just for the way it felt and he knows it gets noticed on a night out.

Nothing wrong with that of course, if dudes can wear earrings & have tattoos then why not a heavyweight on their wrist. At least it does have some use lol.

Watches are there for the inevitable moment when your phone runs out of battery. Which can be very useful :)

To change the battery requires it to be sent off for 2 weeks and costs £150.

It's almost as if it differs from person to person.

"Business Environment" is a little vague to say the least.... I would agree with you but only regarding very high end business. Most business professionals I have come across don't have any issues with being surgically attached to their phones.

Ironically I've actually been a little 'worried' about this - basically I lost my watch a month or two ago and have just used the clock on my phone/laptop. No problem in a standard office environment. However I am working on client site, doing presentations etc this week so looking at my phone at the wrong moment would be a faux pas as I see it. No idea if there will be a clock visible in the room either.

At the end of the day if I could find one of my watches I'd wear it, so while watches are less useful than they once were, I don't think they are redundant. And I'm speaking purely as somebody who views them primarily as a functional item rather than a fashion accessory.

I'm 19 and I love technology, but I also love watches and think that they are extremely classy, and like a suit will never go out of fashion.

But reading the time from a digital display is quicker than from analog.
Not if you've been brought up with a watch on your arm and you know how to tell the time and don't have to mentally do the 'big hand is on the six' routine.

All it takes is a glance and the time is read instantly. None of this having to translate (say) 18:12 into 'just gone ten past six'.

A decent watch is an heirloom which you can hand down through multiple generations. A smart phone is pretty much a disposable item.

I agree 100% with the OP. Watches are a COMPLETE waste of money these days. Almost everything I own has a clock on it and if it doesn't there's always a clock around me.

With people saying "ohhh its extra effort in getting the phone out of your pocket and pressing the button to turn it off sleep mode just to check the time" which it SUCH a process, seriously get your head out...

Paying out anything over 100 for a watch is madness, they all do the same thing.

I stopped wearing mine because the battery went. For a week or so I really missed it but didn't have time to go into town to get a new one.

After a couple of weeks I realised I had adapted and was still functioning just as well without it. Its funny how many places the time is displayed that you just don't notice if your immediate reaction is to turn your wrist to look for the time.

I don't think in some areas they will ever disappear, but with so many devices displaying the time I think they will become more and more a statement and less and less a necessity for most.

I used to wear watches all the time until the batteries went. I haven't had a chance to find a place that will replace the batteries for a reasonable price (Ernest Jones wanted something like £150 to replace the battery in one of my Seiko watches?!?)

So I just check the time on my phone now. Or I ask others for the time :D
