Lonesome George is dead...

I would like (or maybe not) to see how many species go extinct each year. I bet it makes for some painful reading :(

Wasn't old either.

RIP George.

he was only the last of his kind because of us, apparently they taste great..

their are still a lot of giant tortoise left, just not his type, but very close i think to how he looks

edit, dont know why i bothered saying out, its all in the link, just thought i'd add my bit from the top of my head and not off the net.

Sad news :(... We are slowly (in some cases quickly) making the world we live in less biologically diverse for our kids and all the souls to yet enter life in the future. How sad really that the people of the future never will see some of these animals, plants and other life forms because of our silly ways .

That is sad. But to be brutally honest, once a species gets to the point where there's only a handful of individuals left it may even be kinder to let them reach their natural conclusion. Even if we are responsible for them being in that situation, due to the founder effect the genetic diversity of any subsequent population would be far too low. You would have infertility, genetic conditions and constant other problems that would make it nearly impossible to ever return to normal.

This.

Plenty of species go extinct because they simply do not have the genetic traits necessary for survival in the ecosystem as it is today.

Rather sad though :(

Sad news but it should be noted that this is a subspecies going exist rather than an entire species - it makes me feel slightly less sad about the situation at least :(

Very true.

Very sad though, I remember learning all about his 'plight'.

Don't tell me if he was available as a luxury dish you wouldn't eat him!
I would.

It is a little disappointing to see the last of an entire species gone but it happens all the time. Pandas are next.
