Are watches redundant?

I don't tend to wear my watch at home but always will when I leave the house. Far easier to glance at my wrist than to use a phone.

Incidentally, I find girls more attractive if they wear a watch, it just says something about them to me, somehow.

I agree 100% with the OP. Watches are a COMPLETE waste of money these days. Almost everything I own has a clock on it and if it doesn't there's always a clock around me.

With people saying "ohhh its extra effort in getting the phone out of your pocket and pressing the button to turn it off sleep mode just to check the time" which it SUCH a process, seriously get your head out...

Paying out anything over 100 for a watch is madness, they all do the same thing.

There are plenty of things that are a waste of money, like upgrading your phone every time your contract ends, or having to buy the latest PC components etc. That's the beauty of disposable income, people will buy things that they like, people that don't understand are complete losers.

I used to wear watches all the time until the batteries went. I haven't had a chance to find a place that will replace the batteries for a reasonable price (Ernest Jones wanted something like £150 to replace the battery in one of my Seiko watches?!?)

So I just check the time on my phone now. Or I ask others for the time :D

If they want that much its probably being sent away for a controlled battery fitting where they will ensure seals etc are watertight to the spec of the watch.

My Longines is the same, I just took the risk and said no do it here and sod the risk of it getting wet. I based that on the fact its waterproof to 10 atmospheres so the seals have to be bloody good. I figured it would probably be fine to drop in the bath after being done, but if I drop it into 10 atmospheric pressure I am probably not going to be get it back anyway.
(10ATM is 100m). I aint going down 100m to fetch it ;)

OP Answer: Yep

Everything in this day an age has a clock on it, and if it doesn't someone next to you will. If you think taking a phone out of your pocket to check the time is more effort then tilting your wrist, then how can you be bothered to get out of bed in the morning!?

The only time a watch is beneficial is if your are on an expedition/diving where electricity may not always be on tap.

A watch is more of a peice of clothing these days to finish off a "look" rather then being a necessity.

A decent watch is an heirloom which you can hand down through multiple generations. A smart phone is pretty much a disposable item.

Doesn't mean that its not redundant though does it. You could have a 500 year heirloom that sits on a mantle piece, its still redundant.

This. A good watch finishes off a suit, looks smart, if going out I'd always wear a watch and can understand what people mean by they feel naked if they don't have one on. At my place of work it looks rude and inappropriate if I get my phone out everyone I need to check the time. These days I'd much rather spend money on items like a quality watch rather than try and keep up with the latest and greatest video cards or technology. A suit or even just a shirt without a watch just doesn't look or feel right.

It also doesn't mean it is redundant, that would all depend on whether the person uses it or not.

I own a nice watch which and it is generally worn as a peice of jewelry. I don't wear it to work as it's not allowed and i don't wear it at home as there is clocks almost on everything i use from the TV to even the Rice cooker. When i go out i try to remember to bring it but most of the time i forget it and if i am wearing it i will still, out of habit get my phone out to check the time instead of looking at the watch. I also suffer from the fault of the digital age where it would take me longer to figure out the time from my watch compared to taking my phone out and reading it digitally.

A good watch is not too much different from a peice of art, (In some instances with such a vast array of tiny mechanisms is a peice of art in itself.) Good brands tend to depreciate little so it isn't such a terrible waste of money, so i can clearly understand why people may be defensive over criticism of such an item.

Are watches redundant? For me as a timekeeping device, yes. As a fashionable, attractive and functional (not in my case) peice of jewelry, no.

What a ridiculous thread. A lot of people don't work in an environment where they can whip out their phone and look at it.

So you often find yourself in an environment where you need to know the time but find it socially unacceptable to peek at the phone?

I find that hard to believe.

I wore a watch every day up until I was carrying a phone everywhere and then I just stopped bothering with a watch one day.

There are very few situations where its not appropriate to use a phone to tell the time and even in high end business situations there are usually clocks in board rooms, etc. and outside of meetings theres no real issue with using a phone.

I've seen a massive reduction in the number of people wearing watches over the last 5-6 years and I think its a trend thats going to continue unless tech changes.

Personally I've always found flashy watches a bit odd... a smart watch is one thing but never understood why someone would wear a 3grand omega, etc. just seems utterly pointless.

They wear a £3K Omega because they like the watch. If I made anywhere close to the national average wage, I'd spend £3K on a watch.

As it is, I need to buy a car, and every time I think about parting with the £2.5K I've saved for it, I think about that black Seamaster I've been wanting the last few years.

I used to wear a watch but when i started work in a restaurant years back couldn't wear it. Since then not bothered too. Got mobile phone and clocks available

lolfashion, pretty much.

But then I am a function over form kinda guy, so have never understood shelling out loads of money on anything that is purely aesthetic (and more often than not just for bragging rights).

I haven't worn a watch in ages. I like the idea of them, I have one, but just don't see the need for it when I have a phone.

And who is to say that watches wont incorporate a telephone. Would rather carry a phone/media player strapped to my wrist! (if its small enough that is.)

I always wear a watch, usually a digital Timex one, so nothing flash. Got a nicer Timex analogue watch if I want something a bit smarter too.

There's lots of times its far better and easier to glance at a watch than find your phone just to check the time.

Bought myself a nice watch after finding myself reaching into my pocket 200 times a day to check up on time. Far more convenient. It really all it is, convenience.

I wear a watch..i use both my watch and my phone to tell the time..both have their place and they aren't mutually exclusive.

The watch allows me to tell the time while I'm doing something with my hands. The phone tells me the time when its in my hands.

I also love the mechanics of watches and think some of them look lovely. I don't wear my watches for other people to see..Just for me.

Plus, good luck keeping your phone going after the zombie apocalypse.
