Hey, so I just bought Deus Ex GOTY, Deus Ex Invisible War & Missing Link.

Deus Ex GOTY downloaded 420MB at 8mb/s in about 15 seconds, Invisible War downloaded 1.2GB at 7mb/s in about a minute and now I have a problem with Missing Link.

Why is it downloading so slow? While Deus Ex GOTY & Invisible War were downloading, it was going at about 2mb/s alongside them, which is understandable as Virgin cap your downloads to 10% of your overall net speed which still doesn't stop it being overkill. I haven't been capped either as I've used 1.5GB/10GB bandwith in the last 5 hours as a speed test and various other things show. I'm ridiculously confused as to why my speeds for this has just derped, as I want to play The Missing Link asap.

If anyone knows why it would be doing this, or how I can speed up Steam downloads I'd appreciate it, I've switched my server from London to Manchester which is giving the same 3-500kb/s. Infact right now it is 200kb/s...

The only time I get slow speed on Steam is the sales or big releases. It'll max me out year round and time of the day otherwise.

Are you certain you've not been capped? Virgin used to be hell for me when I was on the 20mb package, and as you say, you've been slowed to pretty much your capped speed.

Yeah, 100% positive, I downloaded the Deus Ex GOTY texture pack at 4mb/s in Chrome at the same time, The Missing Link was stuck at 2-500kb/s from the second that Deus Ex & Invisible War finished.

I'm lucky if my steam download rate gets above 120kb/s

Are you sure that isn't just your internet? I've never seen that before, what server are you connected too?

are you sure you are not being traffic managed??

or maybe lots of people are downloading this and steam is being slow

I don't understand why Virgin would throttle my download speed of the DLC, yet let me download everything else at the same time at the same speeds.

Nor do I understand why The Missing Link would have more traffic than the other two I downloaded, or why it would suddenly stop going fast the second its the only one left.

Try a content server outside the UK. In the past I found the UK ones to be slow for some reason, but the French/German/western EU ones gave me max speed.

Hopefully not too long until VM get their own (see the other thread).

I have seen some strange things with my steam download speeds recently:

I purchased ARMA2 and the expansions to play @dayz, I attempted to download them at the same time, for some reason I was only able to achieve a peak download rate of 240KB/S according to steam between the two games, it took about 12 hours to download all the content, changing content server and country made absolutly no difference.

previously I have had download rates of ~700KB/S over steam and even origin was able to update BF3 at a rate of 800KB/S a few days after I downloaded ARMA2. (800KB/s is probably the limit of my connection)

My download is maxed out at about 790KB/S but have seen it sit at about 200KB/S before, until I stop the download, exit and reload steam then restart the download. No idea why that should work but it does sometimes kick it back in at my pitiful max speed.

Why don't Steam just fix this and give us max possible download speeds?

Their own content server, do you mean to connect to and download via Steam? What would be in it for them? They are total bandwith nazi's.

I've experienced similar situations with Sky Fibre as well as Virgin Media. So I think it's a Steam issue. It doesn't happen very often, but can be annoying when it does happen.
