So mad at pets@home

Had 2 bad shopping experiences with them and will not be back.

One involved me buying 2 goldfish for a new tank with my 4 year old son who I had promised some new fish too after one of them died (they refused to sell them to me as they believed the tank wasn't suitable and hadn't been set-up for long enough and it was "their policy") - seriously it's goldfish.....and I got them no problem an hour later in a local independent pet shop.

The other involved me with my 2 sons again, trying to buy a reduced bag of stones for a fish tank... said stones not on the system at reduced price, then the till operator unable to scan them through - calling the manager....chatting for 5 minutes with the 3 customers behind me who were served before me..etc.etc.... whilst I'm stood for another 5 minutes with a crying baby in my arms, and my son wondering why everyone else is getting served. 10m minutes to buy a reduced bag of fish-tank stones - and not so much as an apology for keeping me waiting.

My mate has complained to Watchdog about Pets@Home, they sent him an email back asking for a convenient time to contact him to speak about it as they are doing an investigation.

They should not be in business, they do not care for the animals in their stores at all.

If anyone has any trouble with them then now is a good time to send Watchdog an email!

Went into either a pets@home or petsmart store a couple of years ago and they were selling single lovebirds. Figured out at that point that they don't have a clue or care so only use local pet stores who have a clue or private breeders now.

Have an awesome syrian hamster at the moment totally hand tame quite happy to come out and play with the kids never bitten anything but he was bought from a breeder quite unlike the one my mate bought for his daughter that would bite anything that came near it and that was from pets@home.

Pets at home are ****. Weve just had one open by us in town.

First day of opening they had several dead fish in the tanks and i heard the assistant telling customers they were 'just resting'.

On a subsequent visit they had at least half a dozen tanks where the fish were all pretty badly infected with white spot. A customer wanted to buy some of the infected fish and i intervened saying dont buy them as they will infect your other fish in your tank.

The sales advisor told me i was taslking rubbish lol.

In another branch a few years back i saw a tank with 5 or 6 piranha in it that were happily chomping away at the black widow tetras they had in the tank with them.

Upon informing the so called fish expert he replied with 'oh its ok they are just vegetarian piranhas' and they make good community fish.

I asked for the manager and insisted the fish were taken out of the piranha tank

They really are useless. Experts they are not!

When I was young, pretty sure my parents bought my rabbit from a Pets@home, or a similar big pet store.
Was sold to us as a dwarf, in the end it was about the same size as our jack russell.

Thank god for the internet these days, always take anything that people say in any pet store with a pinch of salt. Especially when it comes to fish.

Then again I have no sympathy for the OP and his problems.
In this day & age there is no reason why any bad purchase should ever be made and he should have followed up his 'I did read online that two female Chinese dwarfs will fight'.
He could have gone on a proper pets forum or even here to ask questions before parting with cash.
There's nothing wrong with going to shops overrun by kids being paid a minimum wage as long as you do your homework first.

Errm... cash is not the issue... I've spent over 100 pounds on hamster stuff in the week I've had them. I have been phoning around asking if anyone would take one and willing to supply another cage to that person.

Yes I did some reading, but I before I had this experince with pets at home giving me bad advice, I didn't know pets at home was considered as a bad pet shop and ran by kids.... I'm just highlighting my issues so that other people are aware, speically as they have an offer on saying two dwarfs for ...

back int the day Russian dwarf hamster's was the thing, i had two together they were no problem although i think it was cause they were brothers.

Love dwarf hamsters 3>

It is a little known fact that Richard Hammond did infact kill his own twin brother whilst still in the womb. They really are violent little buggers and not to be trusted.

Frilly (my gf named them) is back at the shop. As soon as I walked in the girl who did look like she knew what she was on about guessed that they was two female Chinese dwarfs and was more than understanding, they even offered my a refund. I guess it shows that you can't tar all members of staff with the same brush.

I've always had excellent service from Pets at Home for my rabbit's needs. Used their vet services a few times including when Charcoal needed the snip and had an ear infection.

I didn't get my rabbit from them though. He was one of 4 brothers that my cousin was looking after, offspring off a couple that my aunt had.

I'm not a fan of Pets@Home because one opened near me which put the small local fish shop out of business. Pets@Home then had a huge aquarium section, however they have recently started adding Vet services to their stores. In order to build a vet section at the back of the store, they have reduced the aquarium section to a quarter of its size with nothing like the selection they had before.
