Well my Ainol Novo 7 Aurora II arrived.

Updated 26/06/12

So I hit issues with the tablet out the box with random screen presses without me touching it, I couldn't work out why at the start.

The company that I got it from had added the screen protector that I had ordered as well so I tried taking it off but no change in the response from the tablet so I switched it off for two days.

Anyway I was giving it a clean before I was going to package it, I switched on one last time to find it was working perfectly! :D

It seems the protector left some gunk on the screen and with that clean it was working correctly.

So onto the device OS, OK so the ROM version that comes on the device has some issues.

The WiFi drops off after about 5 meters and two thinnish walls.
Some Apps aren't compatible according to Google play but its not the case and future ROM versions (Currently out) should sort this issue.
There has been some reports of the touch panel not recording clean motion on the screen (Can be seen when sticking it into developer mode)
Also some people are reporting the device is getting hot to untouchable in performance mode (1.5Ghz).

So far I haven't noticed the over heating or the screen tracking, but the WiFi and apps are issues for me. I'm just waiting on some others testing the new ROMs before I upgrade.

Also I watched a 1080p video on my TV via the mini HDMI connection and it was flawless :D

I did not some stutter on the default web browser when accessing flash sites but nothing that I find unusable.

Also I forgot the WiFi isn't always reconnecting correctly, sometimes I have to power off and restart. Annoying but should be fixed hopefully in future ROMs.

All in for £135 delivered this is one slick tablet :)

Well the hardware is very nice and when it works the device seems fairly smooth in games and it navigates the OS slickly!

BUT it seems I've got an issue with this unit as the screen on its own even when I'm not touching it randomly presses parts of the screen on a near constant basis. I cant even get to input the wifi password without it randomly adding characters on its own :(

I'm gutted as I really like it so far, so I now need to arrange with the company (Chinese) to get another one shipped :(

Ouch, that's unlucky.

I've noticed not many of these tablets have bluetooth. Anyone know why that is?

Bluetooth comes as a separate package (IC) in some cheaper designs, they don't want to pay for the chip & ariel simply.

Yeah, I figured that too but even the more expensive tablets don't have it so I thought maybe could be another reason besides cost.

I read they were changing it for the western market... surprised it hasn't happened with the new editions they've recently released. :D

Well it seems to be the screen protector that was the issue, I didnt clean it after removing it. So i did before switching it on, looks like it must have left some gunk on the screen as the tablet isnt randomly pressing the screen now.

So far I have been removing all the Chinese apps on the device, first annoying one was for the keyboard.

I will post some pictures when I get a chance to upload them, also I switched it to performance mode (1.5Ghz) and is slick as a babies bum! :D

Does your touchscreen go to the extremes of the tablet? I'm finding my touchscreen stops 6 or 7mm shy of the edges all the way around. Pretty annoying when apps put menus at the extreme top of the screen! Otherwise it's a beautiful piece of kit!

Do you mean the response to your finger stops at 6-7mm from the edge? If that's what you mean then no I get full response from my finger touch.

Also I've updated the thread with images and and my first impressions, also the screen issue is sorted. Damn screen protectors!

On my Novo Elf 7 I get the message that a lot of apps are not compatible. Very annoying. Is it the chinese stuff somewhere, or ICS ?

I have you updated your devices ROM to the latest version for it? if not I suggest you do, also some of the previous versions of the Ainol tablets use incompatible GFX or CPU cores. The Elf 2 and Aurora 1/2 use ARM CPUs and Mail 400 GPUs which are widely used by other tablet makers unlike the older chips that Ainol used.

Update, Elf 1 uses these: CPU: All Winner A10 1.2 GHz, GPU: Mali 400 512 Mb so I imagine it might just be a ROM update to sort your issues.

Hmm... no idea how to find or update the ROM. Will do some research.

Its easier than you think, check your mail :)

Disclaimer: I take no responsibly for you upgrading your firmware, most have no issue at all with this process. But if you want more advice there is a ton of Android forums out there with advice on this model, email me if you want some links.

If you enable "show pointer" in the developer settings menu, how close can you get the pointer to the screen edge. My X cannot go lower than 20 and no higher than 1003. i.e. there is a 20 pixel no go border around the edge. Is yours the same?

This looked a really good tablet, but with Google pricing the Nexus 7 at £159, I expect the Ainol price to drop substantially, probably sub £100 to compete. The Nexus 7 looks a no-brainer for a quad-core at its price point.
