Are watches redundant?

Timepieces and watches are different. If you're using your watch as a bit of bling then it's an attempt to show off your status and wealth.

Your average casio, timex, sekonda (Argos catalogue collection watches) are all redundant as people now have perfect access to the time in the form of mobiles, ipods, Kindles, Vitas, ipads etc, etc so knowing the time or guessing the time is more accurate in this technological age.

I think this thread has proved those watches aren't redundant as it's normally much easier to look at a watch than to drag a phone out of your pocket.

What you fail to understand and this goes for plenty of people in this thread, is that the average person doesn't have a clue what you are wearing if you wear an expensive watch unless it's an Omega or Rolex. You say to the average person have you heard of an IWC, Panerai, Patek Phillipe, Audermars Piqué, Jäger le Coutre etc and they wouldn't know what on earth you are talking about. Showing off wealth and status if no one knows what on earth it isn't doesn't really work does it.

Those people are in denial and are trying to pull the wool over my eyes. Maybe out of force of habit people keep watches or are preserving a tradition but I find mobiles glued to people; more than watches on my daily commute, besides I can't remember the last time someone ever asked me for the utime. :p

I'll Google those after corrie and if they look bling then I'll rest my case that watches are nothing but man jewellery.

Read the thread, there's lots of examples people have given as to why they still wear watches to tell the time.

I much a prefer a watch, it's so much easier to look at the time that taking my phone out - also in a business environment it's more subtle and professional to look at your watch than to pull my phone out. Also my watch is on me basically all the time, regardless of what I'm wearing or doing.....same can't be said for my phone.

I use a personal sundial, never seen the need for any of these high tech "watch" thingamajigs.

Saying that, I use an altimeter watch when hiking and ski touring as I need to have a precise altitude for navigation and it is also useful to track climb rate and rpogress towards the summit.

Saying that, despite having a wrist watch with altimeter when climbing I use my phone to to the time, as it is just quicker than pressing buttons to changes modes n the wrist watch or digging it out from the layers of clothing. The phone also gives my a GPS coord while I check the time, which is handy.

You can choose to believe what you want, just because you don't understand or care about the engineering and design of a mechanical watch movement doesn't mean other people don't.

The fact you watch corrie as you put it kind of makes your opinion irrelevant anyway. ;)

I haven't had a watch for years but wouldn't mind one now as my job means I often have to leave my phone at my desk (can't take a phone into tech halls), it's easier to check the time on a packed tube/train, and I wouldn't mind something for the gym as well since I don't want to be 'one of those people' who's always looking at their phone, even if it's for timing rest between sets etc.

pfft...who wants to show off to ignorant peasants anyway? i only care about showing off to those who are cultured enough to know those brands.

It's nothing to do with wealth.

I do understand that people use them as jewellery and they are nice don't get me wrong.

However, for me, I just would rather just wear a simple watch to tell the time.

I'm not really a materialistic person, and I don't wear jewellery - I'd rather spend 1000s on going on holiday (which I do several times a year) than on a watch. :)

I think it's great if you can afford one and are happy to wear an expensive item - then good for you.

It's just not for me really.

However, now I have an urge to wear my watch again! :D

I was joking ;)

Thread comes at an odd time as I've started to wear my watch more often now. Got to a point i just couldn't stand my watch as the ticking used to keep me awake, so it went in a drawer and only came out when i was going out with friends or to more presentable places. Then times where it was uncomfortable when cycling or working. But i just decided to wear it more often recently but I'm looking to get a nicer/quieter one in the near future as i do like wearing a watch.

I'd also like to make a point that these days I think some people have their mobile phones as a fashion accessory with my favorite example of the iphone removing all those useful buttons and removable battery, I don't think any of my friends wear watches though.

No they definitely aren't!

I grew up never wearing a watch and checking my phone. I recently bought a few watches - It is more convenient and classier than checking your phone!

much quicket to look at watch than a phone also there are times and places where getting a phone out is innappropriate

I like having a nice piece of quality engineering to be able to do this
