Hello all,

Just moved into a new flat (well, a couple of months ago) and I've had a water bill through. We're not on a meter and seem to be on a flat rate. I've never had any dealings with water bills and the like before, but they're asking for £280 for the year.... It's a two bedroom flat.

i) is this amount reasonable? Is it negotiable?
ii) why exactly do I have to pay a year's water bill up front?!

Thanks for any insight!

that's a bit excessive for a flat, but iirc its based also on the price of the property.
and no, you can call the water company to get it charged by monthly direct debit

We have just had a new estimated bill for our water rates on our 1 bed flat, they are going to take £30 a month!!! Does seem rather high to me.

For comparison I'm moving into an 8 bed student house and I have a flat rate of £516 a year. I don't think yours is bad, I think ours might be pretty good though.

£23 / month for a flat-rate water supply is pretty good tbh. I am currently on a flat-rate, but my local water company is forcing me to take a water meter following some recent Government legislation :(

Water used to be based on rateable value.

You would almost definatey be better off on a meter unless you really use excessive amounts of water.

If you have a large family or are excessive water users you will normally be better off on a flat rate. Although you typically cannot move from a meter to a flat rate.

The size of the house makes practically no difference to the water usage, a 4 deb detached house doesn't have bigger toilets than a 1 bed flat ;) Its the number of people and their usage pattern thats the key. 1 or 2 maybe showering/bathing daily will almost definately be better off on a meter even for a small property with a low rateable value. Certainly as the house gets bigger for few residents the meter will be more and more attractive.
Manage to cram 20 into a 2 bed semi and the flat rate looks quite appealing ;)

I've got a fixed water rate and I pay ~£80 a year for supply (Portsmouth Water) and ~£20 p/m for disposal (Southern Water). That's for a 2 bed semi.

£23 a month is good, I'm paying £33 a month. Planning on buying the biggest fishtank possible and getting a reverse osmosis unit installed to make the most of it :)

That's just slightly over £3 per month more then what I'm paying (council water rates and not direct from the water board).

I'm gonna be paying £24 a month for a one bed flat, with just me living there, and only a shower, no bath.

Noob question. Does that really mean then that I can use as much water as I like and I won't suddenly get landed with a big bill? Been living with the parents for 3 years, and the flat before that all my bills were included. :)

If you don't have a meter then how will they know ;)
