Got an appointment next week. I'm really only going to get my CV looked at and hopefully find a job but my family and friends have all said I should sign on too as that's where my previous taxes have gone. It could take months to find a job so I do need some cash inflow really, it's just the stigma attached to signing on I don't like.

Anyway, it's not a job interview, or is it? I don't really want to suit up if I'm going to look out of place. Thoughts?

Normal cloths, it's not a job interview they will have normal cloths on and so will everyone else inside the Job center.

I would personally dress smart-casual. Maybe a casual shirt and jeans. Suit is a little too much in my opinion. I don't think they'll be judging you too much on dress code, it's just to see what sort of qualifications you have and see what jobs you could go for.

I don't see why you wouldn't take advantage of signing on if you could be spending months unemployed...

I always wore casual clothes, jeans / t shirt, pretty much everyone i saw also did, and it was never mentioned.

I'd advice signing on, it's extra income you're entitled to if looking for work, but don't take the **** :D make sure you actually look for jobs (Goes without saying but... )

It may not be what you want to hear, but for me the job center was beyond useless in assisting me to find a job, as my CV was top notch before i went (It had been graded in an apprenticeship i did, had to re do it like 4 times), they pretty much just said good luck heres some jobs that use computers...

I wouldn't be too worried about making an effort to look smart, it's their job to help you find a job, not your job to impress them.

Ask about your ILA fund and you get £200 to do a course, like forklift licence, Security Licence etc if you want to take that up since they never mention it. Also they will give you £100 for interview cloths if you ask :D

I really wouldn't worry about what to wear, the people working in the job centre are not assessing you like a potential employer would. They are not looking to hire you, they really don't care how you look.

To be honest, if you wore a tattered and stained bin bag you would look better than half the people in the job centre.

I was on JSA for a couple months about a year and a half ago.

Edit:

As mentioned by the poster above, if your hoping for valuable assistance with finding a job you are going to be disappointed with the job centre. Sorry to say, but they are not very helpful.

Dress as much as a common chav as possible. Chew chewing gum whilst breathing through your teeth.

Et viola!

New house, tv, dvd, sky subscription etc.

Dress properly and get about a tenner a week.

Smart-Casual will do. The people in the JobCentre wont care what you are wearing as they wont be involved in the process of you finding work, just monitoring to ensure you are actively seeking employment.

Oh and prepare to encounter the scum of the country, i always remember the vest wearing chav infront of me with a can of Carling sticking out of his back pocket... :(

Well, one that wouldn't embarrass you in an interview at a decent place

I don't want to derail the OP's thread but I disagree with this as well. You just cannot buy a new suit for less than 100 quid that doesn't look nasty, shiny and/or held together with double-sided tape and staples.

I'd wear a suit, just to make sure I didn't get mistaken for one of the "regulars".

it's their job to help you find a job

AHahahahhahahahahah!!!! Should be in the "joke of the week" thread

Seriously, you'd get more help finding a job from a rabbit that's just been hit by a truck.

I disagree with you. Unless you think a tailored suit is the only suit that looks nice. Other than that they're all made in the same factory anyway.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to wear something in between tshirt and jeans and suit.

Just had a look at the place on google street view, and I can see from the people outside what you lot are talking about, I think I would look out of place in any of the clothes I own.

You can get some ok suits from M&S for under £200, but I guess £100 is pushing it a bit...
