CPU fan running at 100% non-stop WHY!

Despite having a perfectly running PC I decided to upgrade to an SSD.

In order to get the most of it, I wanted a controller card but didn't have a spare expansion slow. Because I needed to reinstall Windows anyway I decided to buy a new motherboard.

It's an old chipset: socket 775. An Asrock P5B-DE.

Aside from the bios having to be flashed to support AHCI, everything went pretty well.

That is except for the CPU fan. It's some random Foxconn 4pin heatsink fan, but for some reason it runs at 100% all of the time and it's driving me mad.

Now I can use Speedfan, but that doesn't kick in until after I've logged into Windows and there isn't an equivalent for Linux.

I can use the Bios cool n'quiet feature, but I have to manually set a fan speed; which it sticks to no matter the CPU temp. Plus Speedfan stops working when this feature is active.

I tried using a fan controller, but either they only support 3 pin fans or I can never seem to get the temperature probe to give a reading anywhere near what the computer is reporting.

I just want automatic active fan control. Is there a fan controller that connects to the mobo and the cpu fan?

Any ideas what else I could try?

Cheers,
Ben

Check your BIOS settings... if you can't set the speed from there then you're stuffed.

Alternative is to use a different fan header providing fan control on that header works (again via the bios settings)

I can set the speed, it's just that I don't want to permanently set it.

Most of the time the fan only needs to be at 30%, but during games it should go up to 50%+

If the motherboard has lost the ability to do this dynamically the I need something external to do this instead. :(

OK gotcha - so the BIOS auto control is busted.

I had something similar but the complete opposite where the offical BIOS could never auto control the speed but when I needed ACHI via a hacked BIOS everything seemed to work :o

Good luck chief .... you're on your own on this one .... it's definitely a BIOS issue or a setting that you've missed. I presume you've set the target CPU temperature correctly ? (quite high usually say +15C of what it is at idle - something like 55-60C)

So what is the target temp?

The max temp the CPU should reach?

Sort of. If you're looking for quiet then you'll need to bump the value up.

If for example your cpu idles at 40C and you set the target temp at 45C you may find that since you're so close to the target temp the fans still spin fast despite being under the target temp

Set it to 55C and the fan spins slower etc

Think the idle temp is around 32C so I'll have a play around.

I think I can set the fan speed to level 5 (1-9) which is a reasonable noise level and should handle the heat when playing games.

Thanks a lot for your advice ;)
