Despite having a perfectly running PC I decided to upgrade to an SSD.
In order to get the most of it, I wanted a controller card but didn't have a spare expansion slow. Because I needed to reinstall Windows anyway I decided to buy a new motherboard.
It's an old chipset: socket 775. An Asrock P5B-DE.
Aside from the bios having to be flashed to support AHCI, everything went pretty well.
That is except for the CPU fan. It's some random Foxconn 4pin heatsink fan, but for some reason it runs at 100% all of the time and it's driving me mad.
Now I can use Speedfan, but that doesn't kick in until after I've logged into Windows and there isn't an equivalent for Linux.
I can use the Bios cool n'quiet feature, but I have to manually set a fan speed; which it sticks to no matter the CPU temp. Plus Speedfan stops working when this feature is active.
I tried using a fan controller, but either they only support 3 pin fans or I can never seem to get the temperature probe to give a reading anywhere near what the computer is reporting.
I just want automatic active fan control. Is there a fan controller that connects to the mobo and the cpu fan?
Any ideas what else I could try?
Cheers,
Ben
