Was literally seconds from buying a 670...

When I spotted this on sale: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-276-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938

So, I really need a little advice from you good people. Should I go for this 670: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-018-KF

Or the above 7970. I don't want to spend any more than that 7970 if anyone does have any alternative suggestions. For £12 difference, it was a real spanner in the works (and I thought I finally had my upgrade all sorted too :p). Planning to purchase tomorrow (today technically I suppose :D).

Thanks in advance

I did actually do a little reading in the past few minutes about the sheer size of the 7970, would it literally be impossible to go crossfire and have say, a sound card in? I'm planning on getting this mobo: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-390-GI

Hmm, I didn't see the windforce, is that a better card than the KFA2 one?

And the overclocking thing is a bit of a pain, but I would be pretty happy with 1100 to be honest as I have never overclocked a GPU (overclocked my CPU but never the graphics card).

Thanks again

You see I want the card to last me around 3 years at close to/at the max settings and get as close to a constant 60fps at 1080p I can get.

Would the 3Gb of Vram give me slightly more lifespan before the next upgrade or is that just apples and oranges over 2gb?

Basically (now that jeff6475 threw the windforce into the mix), I've got a choice between the:

KFA2 GeForce GTX 670 EX OC (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-018-KF)

Asus HD 7970 DirectCU II (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-276-AS&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938)

Or, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 670 Windforce 3X (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-095-GI)

Is that benchmark score with an oc'd 670 do you know?

A stock 7970 will beat a stock 670, but when both are overclocked they're around the same.

I'd go with that windforce 670 personally. Don't think the vram will be much of an issue. Only applies to resolutions greater than 1080p

I was leaning towards the windforce myself to be honest with you, and now you have gone and said I should get it, I think I should just buy it :p.

An overclocked 7970 with added voltage will outrun any overclocked 670, it's trading blows with an overclocked 680, albeit the 670 isn't that far behind.

As the card is to last 3 years and nobody knows what vram future games are going to eat, then the card with more vram may perform a touch better.

The Windforce on offer@£360 is the 7970 to get if it's indeed a 7970 you go for, but whatever way you look at it you will get fantastic performance with either.

the windforce 670 is the general consensus around here i assume

i think the general consensus is to go for whichever one you want more. 7970 is more expensive, takes more power and heat, but overclocks beyond 670 potential quite handily, and competes with the 680's max oc. depends on what you do with your card. i'd say you have to oc the 7970 to make it worthwhile, and when you do it becomes a better purchase than a 670 for the future, considering more and faster memory too (personal opinion). not everyone will want to tinker in that fashion of course, and again if you don't oc much the 670 might be a better choice.

or it depends if you're bound to one side because of a particular feature (like amd hd3d for me).

I'm not bound by either sides features to be honest, I currently have 2 4870's in crossfire and haven't had any problems with them. The extra Vram for the future is something I was thinking about too, why do I have to have choice?! :p.

And in terms of the windforce 7970, I know that it's only a £30 difference, but I can't really afford that extra 30 as I have already had to trim some cash off my upgrade.

I'm so indecisive...lol

sorry, my post was out of context, i was replying to db!'s post about which 670 was the best. in that respect, the general consensus is the winforce 670.

The original price of the 670 has gone up quite a lot it seems. I remember it starting off at around £335 (the sale price) and now it's £370...

Really appreciate all the input here, giving me lots to think about :D.

I did some reading into the inability to increase voltage in the 7970 I was looking at, and it does appear to not be able to do that. With that in mind, would the 670 be the better choice as in the future I would be able to overclock further? I will probably leave the thing at stock when I first get it, but overclock if I feel any games could do with that little boost in fps.
