So they opened today and look pretty cool. But I can't help thinking one journey from the dome to the Excel is a bit pointless.

However, compared to other transportation, the support poles and stations have quite small footprints and are obviously very green (including the passengers :p) . Can you ever see the network expanding to offer straight rides between more business based areas for a commuter service or would the cost just be too prohibitive?

No way, utterly inefficient and the same journey is one stop on the jubilee line I think.
How much do theycost? Please be less than three quid!?!?:/

I can see it now

Each of the gondolas packed like sardine cans each morning like the tube and your stuck pressed against other sweaty commuters

At least the tube opens at each station and lets a bit of air in and out, having the same in cable cars would be hell, i think its better that its its kept to this niche route

£16m to build, are they really going to generate that over the Olympic period? Because no Londoner is going to use them out of season after!

Same as Kapoor's tower. How many Londoners are really going to want to go up in that thing for a hefty price to look out over the then-desolate Olympic park and ****** East London? So many jokes about this summer Olympics.

What narrow minded people some of you are. A north-south link on the River Thames in the East End is much needed to alleviate congestion.

It will divert a lot of traffic away from the DLR and Jubilee Lines, and will prevent people from driving through the Blackwall and Rotherhithe tunnels which are already over subscribed.

Many people north of the Thames visit the O2 Arena regularly, and many people in the south of the Thames visit the ExCel exhibition centre regularly. To have a cheap (compared to a new tube line or light railway ala DLR) alternative to fix the problem is great - and this is coming from experience having lived in E16 for many years.

This is much needed and should have come sooner. Naturally I don't expect people living/working further far afield to appreciate it.

In answer to the OP, there is a TfL document around stating the possibility to extend the cable car network deeper into South London providing its feasible. But don't expect anything before 2012.

Granted I don't live in the UK, but this to me has sprung out of nowhere!
How long have they been building it for? It looks pretty cool, for a novelty kind of way.
