Car problems stopping me sleeping, grr.

So are you hoping that it behaves itself just long enough to sell it, so the next sucker has to cough up?

No wonder you can't sleep at night :p

Whats the problem? It doesnt cost much to tax and does good MPG. As we all know this is all that matters when running a car these days apparently :(

My clio cost me £30 to tax in its first year that I owned it! It did like 60mpgzzzz and then cost me £980 in engine repairs

Yay!

Just thought i'd update.

Still not sleeping too great, but feeling a bit better at least. Don't really know why as i'm not out of the woods yet.

I've booked it in to have a full diagnostic run on the DPF and EGR systems on the car. That happens Tuesday. I might end up wasting money if nothing is found but i've got to at least try.

Thing is, the money for it will come out of the next car fund. :p

Also i've been told it's £1680 for a new DPF, fitted. If it turns out to be that, i'm going to cry. A lot. :D

Just remove the thing and clean up the EGR, Next buyer will be happy about it if they have any knowledge of the problems it throws up.

Remove the DPF, it's a PITA, and it'll be better on fuel economy too apparently. You'll be doing the new owner a favour as long as it passes its MOT.

Remove DPF. Then get a fresh MOT to show the next owner that it stillpasses without it. Then sell and be open in the sale that it has been removed. You then have a clean conscience and have taken the cheapest route to fixing, and will be able to move on.

So I didn't want to jinx it, but it turned out (so far) to be the EGR control valve which had broken.

Cost £150 to replace with labour etc. but now the car is absolutely fine, even when running a regeneration cycle.

Apparantly the DPF is in good nick for it's age as well, seems I don't need to be in such a rush to get rid. I still plan to in the next 3 months, mind.

EGR valve got all clogged up on my cousins car (mk5 golf) very common problem with a VAG range at least.

Pity I had to tell them and pay out of my own money for them to pull the EGR off and check it's operation.

Had this been suggested to me months ago I probably wouldn't have gotten to the point of losing sleep over it.

Proper diagnosis of engine problems seems to be a dying art at larger garages. Fault codes aren't exactly infallible, but seem to be completely relied upon in some places. :(
