Any electricians on here? Question about wiring my house to run on batteries.....

Personally, if it was me, i'd just stop the folding - you'd get vastly less draw from your PC and without that churning away all day you'd probably not have need of the air con unit so much either.

As admirable a pursuit as it is, if you're really looking at installing a £3000 battery set up because it's contributing so much to your electricity bill, it might be worth just stopping.

I'm actually considering something in between, when I build my new rig I might move this one to my work place and pay them a monthly fee for electricity. I have a standard electrical meter too so tracking usage is easy.

this is exactly what i was going to suggest. even on a low end PC folding can cost silly amounts on the leccy bill so it must be costing you a fortune

another idea is getting the most efficient boiler you can lay your hands on and going crazy with the insulation because you said you need the water very hot all the time and that it costs a huge amount, so any savings there are always good
 
I think as others have said you're best to cut down your usage before you attempt something like this.

Quit folding, or at least reduce the time spent doing it.

Then stop washing everything every day. Seriously this is just wasteful and unnecessary. There is no way you need to wash everything in the house every day. Even with bad eczema you could wash things every other day and your bill would be cut in half. I really can't believe it makes that much difference and it's possible that excessive washing in the past caused your reaction anyway. I also don't understand why you need to sterilise things because Eczema isn't caused by bacteria.

It is supported by epidemiologic studies for asthma.[9] The hypothesis states that exposure to bacteria and other immune system modulators is important during development, and missing out on this exposure increases risk for asthma and allergy." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eczema#Cause

If you're that paranoid about bacteria I can only imagine you use copious amounts of strong detergent when washing which is far more likely to irritate your skin than one day's dirt.

Also don't use the dryer unless it's raining outside. Please don't tell me you tumble dry all your linen everyday? :S

I assume you live in the UK. Is aircon really necessary? I realise that PC + server + amp must make it pretty toasty but couldn't you move the server to another room and open an window rather than paying a fortune to try and cool something very hot with something very expensive?

You could think about buying some good headphones to use occasionally instead of your amp, which would also reduce power drain.

That's before we even get to small regular savings like not leaving stuff on standby, only boiling the water you need, only using the dishwasher when it's full.

Seems to me the reason you're spending a ridiculous amount on electricity has little to do with increasing energy prices and a lot to do with you using a ridiculous amount of electricity!
 
It does sound like that, Do you have a energy monitor? if not get one and use it to keep a eye on what is nailing your power usage.
 
Step back a second. Economy 7 is designed for cheap rates to charge storage heaters and heat water tanks. Everything else (washing machine, TV, computer etc) is on the normal 'expensive' circuit all day, even during Economy 7 hours.

I'm pretty sure the electricity company would beat you to death with a rolled up copy of the Ts&Cs if you tried this.

Economy 7 doesn't have "two circuits". All it does is flip onto a second meter (it's still one meter, it just has two counters) and begins counting on that within given hours. It would be very impractical to have two circuits in a house given the cost of the rewiring.

Yes I have an old electricity meter (made by GEC) as well as a digital "in line" meter which tracks the usage just from my desk: So PC, monitor, sound system and mini fridge.

It is without a doubt the PC which is chomping through the electro like it's going out of fashion, I have stopped folding for now, might as well save on the bills to save cash for this little venture if I ever do do it.

The reason we wash every day to keep bacteria at low levels is because when you have open soars on your skin you can pick up infections very easily. I have had scabies on more than one occasion with me working on a farm: The disease is picked up through contact with soil for the most part and with me working on a farm I'm in constant contact with it, it may not get to an open soar but if I get into bed without bathing it will then be on the linen, which eventually will hit an open soar. I can tell you, using a strong acidic cream to quite literally burn the top layers of your skin of isn't the nicest experience, try thinking of when you burn the end of your finger, now apply that to the entire body.

And no, we don't use the drier on sunny days unless pollen count is "High" (both me and my father are heavy hay fever sufferers). The aircon is for me, not the PC. I can't stand heat and sweating irritates the skin, causing me to itch, making things worse :)

Lastly I have Grado GS1000 headphones, however I only use these once the parents hit the sack :D
 
Get rid of the pcs dude, it's doing you no favours. Seems to me that on your budget you should be cutting down on usage rather than accommodating it.

Also, if you're on but 10k a year, are there no other jobs you'd keep your eye out for?
 
I really don't think battery's are the answer here, Is this what your parents are after or just some wild fantasy because you cant quash you're energy consumption?

Believe me mate I've been hunting high and low for over 3 years. I was a qualified IT techy at one point but getting a job with no experience when there are over 200 other people applying for the same job isn't going to happen.
 
Stop the bloody folding, Sell the rigs and go on holiday. The Sun will do wonders for your Skin. Sounds like this folding lark has taken over, It happens... Step away from the PC my friend all will be ok.

If it was some wild fantasy I would have just done it once I began harvest work rather than coming on here to get some basic advice on the matter. Also my parents couldn't care less about energy consumption as long as I pay for it, and I work hard to pay for it too.

If this idea could actually hold some potential them I'm sure as hell going to look into it, if it turns out to be economically non-viable then I won't even touch it, simple as that.

You'll be surprised how much less heat there is in your room when you don't have a PC under such crazy load all day long

Dont get into bed covered in soil? Honestly just get into bed clean and there's no reason whatsoever to be washing the linen every day! You're just making work for yourself and wasting money.

Haha, I'm not covered in soil I generally wear overalls all day and wash my hands quite often. However unless I get a bath, which to be frank when I get in from work seems like quite a task :D, I couldn't guarantee I don't have the parasite on my person. I would much rather foot an energy bill than burn my skin off, again.
