Does anyone else think this is wrong?

Hey Overclockers,

One of my friends has just finished his college course (same class as me) and is currently on track to go to University in September to study a BSc.

We finished our course at the start of June and obviously we have 4 months of nothingness in between.

So today we were talking and he was going on about calling the Job Centre and going for JSA until he starts university.

Am I the only person on this planet that considers this wrong? I know for a matter of fact that his family aren't in a 'tough' position when it comes to finances and he's odds on to go to University in September.

I haven't got any problem with a Welfare System, but this has to be a gross mis-use of a service which should be used by those who need help the most?

He seems to think that because of the government paid for his education, he should also take the hand outs.

Am I just speaking too much of a moral sense or should I get real?

If he's looking for work, he is entitled to it. If he's not and just saying he is, then he isn't.

I know a fair few people who did this, at the end of the day as it's a short period of time, it's hard to stop.

If he's not looking for work then he shouldn't be claiming it. I don't think I would claim it even if I was looking for work unless I was desperate. The thought of going to a job centre is something I would rather avoid.

Well if he's not payed national insurance in the last 2 (I think) years he won't get cash for 6 months so it's a bit of a waste of time.

Anyway it's not all that cool really but if he wants to then theres not a lot stopping him.

This was my understanding, as far as I recall they changed the rules several years ago which would remove his ability to claim such monies.

If he's looking for a job, then there's nothing wrong with it, although, not the sort of thing I'd do unless it was the last resort.

If he's just doing it for lazy cash then I'd also think it's wrong. There are people that would deserve it more than he.

This is what's wrong with our benefits culture. It's one built on entitlement rather than need.

When I went to Uni, it didn't even cross my mind to claim JSA in the holiday between. I got off my behind and went down town and walked into every retail store asking if they had jobs. Got an interview that day and was working there within the same week.

IMO, people should always look for work first before claiming benefits, the attitude today seems to be sort out your benefits first and sort the job malarky later.

Of course for a small number of people this isn't possible but I'd bet the vast majority of 18 year olds have parents that can give them money to tide them over for at least a few weeks whilst they looked for work.

AS long as he's looking for work there isn't an issue, that's what it is there for, but if he's just going to doss around - save up and buy a PC from it then he should consider talking a walk....

He's going to spend several years getting himself further and further into debt just to get educated. I think he's entitled to a little something now.

He's hardly steeling off anyone, just taking back some of the money his parent's have paid into the system. I'm sure they would prefer it going to their son rather than a random.
