Carbines are any of the Engi specific weapons.

SMGs are the unlockables which any class can use. In Battlelog go to Stats > Weapons and at the top you can filter by kit or weapon type. PDWs and SMGs are the same thing in BF3.

does the G53 not count as a carbine since its an engineer specific weapon ?

All of the sub machine guns (eg PDWs) are non class specific ?

*edit* yep, battlelog describes it as a "compact assault rifle"

But as already said, the SCAR-H and A91 will count, as does the M4A1, G36C etc..

Yeah, in the Battlelog filtered lists the G53 is a carbine. Which is a bit nuts, but hey, that's BF3 for you.

Yeah I know, but I kind of thought there'd be more than that to it. I guess it must really just depend on how the manufacturer wants to sell it.

EDIT: Although, Wiki says it's a compact version of the HK33 rifle, not a bigger version of the MP5. They all seem to be based on the same original design so I guess it's academic really.
