Heaps better, signal strength is full bars all round the house.

So far not a single glitch. I know its very early days but just using my iPhone then the iPad for more then 2 mins at a time would cause the wi-fi signal to just stop alltogether. And that was after changing chanels, slowing it down etc.

So far so good. :cool:

Hi, just wondering would I notice a difference switching from a Linksys AM200 to one of the Asus routers. I don't know does the AM200 have a hardware NAT.

I am always looking for ways to improve my gaming :-)
 
The AM200 is an ADSL router, is it not?

It's not really appropriate, I'm afraid - unless you had a standalone modem.

I believe there's an ADSL version of the NT56U (NT55?) - but I'm not up to speed on it's features.

Maybe someone else can help?

The AM200 is an ADSL modem. So it can be a standalone modem as well.

No - you would stick the superhub in to "modem mode" and then connect the N56U to the single active port on the superhub.

It depends on how that modem operates... putting it in to it's modem mode may not actually deactivate the software NAT (if any), so adding another router may just add delay.

It all depends on the router... the superhub's "modem mode" isn't a real modem mode... it's just most things disabled. However, adding the N66U gave me a very noticeable improvement in latencies.

I haven't had that much experience with ADSL routers for a while though, hopefully someone more knowledgable will comment.

Best ping I've seen myself have in BF3 is 9ms :)
 
DIR 655, best bit of kit I've ever owned and hasn't crashed a single time in years.

Bought for like £120 years ago, can now be had for £20-30
 
Ok, just got a VM superhub delivered (should be getting free ugrade from 20Mb to 60Mb) ... amusingly VM demanded I specified a delivery date and it arrived on a saturday 2 days early! Think I already know the answer from reading some of the previous posts but I've got a network where the current VM model connects into a LinkSys WRT54GL (still stock firmware, every so often I think I ought to try one of the 3rd party firmwares to unlock some extra features) ... should I even consider using the "Hub" part of the superhub or should I just put it straight into modem mode and use it as a drop in replacement for the existing modem.
 
It will be in router mode by default when its installed, so try it out and see if it seems ok - there is a new firmware (R36) coming out imminently that is supposed to address most of the issues with it, but personally I'll always run a standalone router and just use the hub as the modem.

(But then again I have an RT-N56U so I would think that :P)
 
Hi,

I have a netgear DG834g router and I am looking to replace it but wondered can I just use the RT-N56U only?

Can someone please explain if you have an adsl router, why you will need to use your old router as a modem only and what if your old router is on the way out?
I forgot to mention that I have my router downstairs plugged into a TP-Link 200Mbps Mini Powerline Ethernet Adapter and the second plug is connected to my PC upstairs and I connect my WD live TV box by cable to the router, so the only items connected wireless would be my ipad , iphone and laptop, so do you think I could only use the RT-N56U by itself?

No. The RT-N56U doesn't have an ADSL modem. You could put the DG834G in modem mode or get something like the Billion 7800N.
 
what would the max FTP speeds be like on the RT-N56U - 5MB/s+?

With my S2 Android phone and D-LINK 615 - I'm only getting 1MB/s over FTP.

Think its probably a case of "if it ain't broke then don't fix it" ... current network setup seems fine with Linksys router so I'll probably just drop the superhub in in modem mode to replace existing one.

Well, installed the superhub (VM activation was remarkably smooth ... all automated and no need to tell Indian call centre bod that he needed to activate the modem rather than schedule an engineer visit in a weeks time as happened last time I needed a modem update). With PC connected direct to superhub during initial setup I got the promised 60Mbs from speedtest.net but now I've switched to modem mode and routed through my WRT54GL router I'm down to just over 30Mbs .... is that expected? Is the WRT now just a bit long in the tooth and not up to the speeds of networks today?

Yep that router doesn't have the horsepower to run at the full 60Mb speed. I had a Dlink DIR 615 with DD-WRT that was rated at 75Mb/s with stock firmware, DD-WRT got that to 95Mb/s but the port itself was only 100Mb anyway. The two highly regarded replacements are the Asus RT-N56U or RT-N66U depending on your budget which can both handle 700Mb/s+ on the WAN port.

I'll add a router upgrade to by "to do" list then! ... will also try the superhub in "hub mode" to see if that's any better (but from what I've read it comes with its own set of problems). Meanwhile, found on another PC (where LAN connection needs to go through another switch!) was up to 40-45Mbs.
 
Ok. I've read all comments. I'm still thinking about changing my router from the Home Hub 3.
Can't make my mind up though.... Asus or Apple Airport Extreme, bearing in mind the only wifi I'm using is to my Laptops, iPad and iPhone.

Any comments/advice would be very gratefully received..
