i5 vs i7 ivybridge

Hey guys a simple question

while at present i am pondering on various upgrades for my PC i was looking at getting the i7 ivy bridge bit of a steep price but i always try to go for i7 to get best gaming performances

Reading various recommendations i am seeing that the i5 ivy bridge would be just as good and i7 would only make video editing better which is something i don't do anyway. could someone explain?

Most games only use 4 or less cores at the moment so the extra 4 threads would be just sitting there not doing much in terms of gaming performance.

Additionally games do not make efficient use of hyper threading quite yet either. The difference in games between the i5 and i7 is just around 3 FPS or so.

Hey, thanks for the post its kinda confirmed what i suspected , well id imagine heat output on the i5 would be less meaning easier overclocking room i wouldn't suppose you could recommend which i5 processor to go for?

The i5 3570K is a very nice processor, although, you will need a good cooler if you plan to overclock past 4.2Ghz (or something along them lines)

I have the 3570K but have not overclocked it yet and is running at 29C with a cheapy cooler

Ah thats not bad at all, i am looking at a newer build i have my i7 920 but am looking at future proofing more with usb 3 pcie 3.0 etc etc if i was to overclock the i5 id be looking at 4GHZ or something like that but the stock speeds seem fast enough anyway.

i am aware i wouldnt see a massive difference or anything but if it means getting abit better performance/stability with an i5 and for a much cheaper cost than id be happy

I personally wouldn't bother going with IB if you already have an i7 920, but if you really want to, then the 3570k would be your best option for gaming.

A 920 is still a very good chip i wouldnt even bother upgrading until Haswell in 2013
