:(

Just came back to my MX5 to find some ***** have ripped my roof open with a knife to steal my head unit. Thought it was in a nice area and had never had problems before.

Two 3inch gashes in an L shape. Absolutely great.

Feeling like dirt now. I know I was silly to leave the headunit in but it had never crossed my mind before. Feel stupid now.

No idea what to do :(

Have no decent tape at the moment so have to wait till morning. Have covered it with something for now, all I can do.

It's fabric rather than vinyl so it's vaguely possible to repair, I hope.

****s.
I always leave my HU in thinking nobody is so sad breaking into my car for a HU worth 75 tops 2nd hand...

So far I've been lucky, there was a moment in the past I got tired of taking it out and a year later nothing happened, there are always sad ****'s though who want to ruin someone's care for a couple of tenners . I hope one will never take attention of my car!

Gl though, I'd be gutted with a convertible roof ruined, if I knew who I'd be temped to make 2 L shapes on that someone's face .

Which part of Bristol was it? (I always take my head unit out although I didn't really think that people still stole them these days)

Got a hood for our MX5 from a gut in Swansea, about 180 pounds fitted, if you want the number let me know, he do's a first class job and you can chose the colour.

It was near the White Bear pub, which is just out the back of the uni. I am totally new to the area so it could be a not too nice place, but it didn't seem that way.

Central locking has died on the MX and finding anything to do with the factory fit version on the net is impossible as it was so rare. Radio cage was just ripped out so am left with tonnes of wires and the like with absolutely no idea what they do.

Oh, and a relay which is now attached to nothing, and has no reference made on any MX5 forum anywhere. Assuming it might be for the central locking, or possibly for the power ariel, but I have absolutely no bloody idea.

What the hell do I do :/

First port of call is fix the roof, I had an ex gf do this to me in Bristol, Jack Smith Trimmers over the bridge in Wales is massively reccomended, you will need to spend the day in the hell hole that is Swansea but the job is better than a factory roof according to some people and it's £200ish compared to £600-£1000 elsewhere or having to do it yourself with a kit for the same price and messing it up.

Do this ASAP, don't get it rained in.

Head unit is easy to replace, or someone from half odds will do it for £20. HU itself will cost whatever you want it to.

I know it's **** but never leave your HU in the car, all it takes is to smash a window and 30 seconds to yank it out and it's an easy £60-200 on eBay.

I tried to do the HU myself but I'm too pretty and blonde for electronics (hence being here and letting all the clever manly men tell me how to do things) and the Halfords dude in Cribbs was brilliant, dont know if he will still be there though.

I'm in London at the moment with work but am comin back to Bristol Monday if you want to see the quality of a Jack Smith roof, or ask on the mx5 forums, they all rate him massively high.

Have got the roof sealed to a decent standard for now, and can park under cover most of the time. We've mended rips on other soft tops in the family before so we are gonna give it a go before going the replacement route, as I'd rather not drop £200 right now. If I have to, I will, but I'm gonna avoid it if I can.

Main problem with the radio is how the wires were just ripped out, I can install a head unit no issue, but it's gonna need rewiring as the bus connector and a few others are in pieces. Blah

:/

That's not a bad area at all, it's about 2 mins from my girlfriends house. I park round that way all the time (car and motorbike) and haven't had any problems yet touch wood.
Sounds like some opportunist thief saw the head unit and convertible roof and it was too easy to pass up. Unlucky :(

Having studied in Bristol if things weren't like fort Knox someone would try it. Too many junkies IMO. Great city apart from that though. Good luck getting it resolved
