Hello guys,

Probably a silly question but as the tittle says when installing a psu should I be facing the fan up/down?

Just to add the case I am installing the psu into, is located at the bottom, plus also has a removable mesh rack for dust.

Cheers,
Joe

I always install it so that the fan is facing upwards that way it will drag hot air from the
case and then out the back of the PSU, I think its pretty much a case a personal preferance
though buddy.

I do the opposite and have the fan facing down,That way the PSU has its own clean air supply from the bottom of your case and not warm air from inside the system.

Don't think it really matters though to be honest,Like mentioned personal preference. :)

The cooler the PSU runs the better efficiency it'll have (not a great deal but still), plus it'll last longer at a lower temperature.

I'd have it facing downwards, the warm air above it will rise away from it and all it will be doing is running warmer.

If the case is on carpet, have the fan facing upwards.

As Stulid said though if it is on Carpet then you will want the fan facing
upwards otherwise what happens is all the **** off the carpet gets sucked
through the PSU and then it gets all bits of fluff and stuff stuck inside it.

Always had mine facing down to pull cool air through the bottom, although my case sits on it's own shelf type thing within my desk so no carpet to suck stuff in from!

If you are putting it onto carpet you're probably best getting a piece of wood or something to put under it so then you can mount the PSU fan down with no worries.

I have the Coolermaster 690 II Advanced case and it had abit of a dust grill on the bottom, i figured this would only restrict airflow if anything so i removed it, and thus have the PSU facing downwards. Just going to clean with compressed air every 4-5 weeks.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I'm not entirely sure what surface I will be standing the case upon yet i.e carpet or a wooden stand. I'm hoping to place the case under my desk but if it doesn't fit with the wooden plank (has wheels) I'll probably end up facing the fan upright on carpet.

I've always used the power supply as part of the case cooling, so in your case, up (this would provide cooling for your expansion cards). That being said, my case temperatures are usually very low so it wouldn't affect the power supply much and i'm talking smallish power supplies not thrashed.. i'd be thinking, on a really powerful rig with a big psu to get fresh air into the PSU to keep it cool, so down.. depends on the system and what it's sat on really

Wouldn't having the fan facing up have a negative affect on the overall case cooling though? Should generally be flowing in one side (front/bottom) and out the other (rear/top), hence why side fans usually mess things up!

Actually having the fan up because it's on carpet is a complete myth, I have my PSU fan facing down on carpet because I dont want the hot air running through it and its completely fine.

But as others have said its up too you as it make no difference which ever way really.

Wait, what? I thought all PSUs exhaust...ed (exhaled...? meh you know what I mean) heat from the case, so the fan should be facing up in a bottom mounted case, to pull the hot air out of the case, as part of a front to rear airflow? Or do some cases have fan grills for the PSU so that it can suck cooler air from the room, so it can keep itself cool and noy be part ofthe case air flow?

Id only put it fan face down if the case has a grill at the bottom to bring air in. I tried it face down in my nzxt Tempest case (rev1) which doesnt have a bottom grill and the psu got quite hot as it only had a tiny gap to bring air in from.
