Is the competitive PC FPS scene dying?

From my perspective, for a Competitive FPS to work it has to be simple, that's why it was a lot better in the past, no stupid ranks, unlocks, p2win/unlock, dlcs, yadda yadda yadda, it was just, play, same guns, same health, same aim, it was even.

They are increasing the variables at which a level playing field becomes harder and harder to admin.

maybe more choice makes it seem like less people play....

once upon a time there was quake or unreal...

a lot more people have internet / PC's now but there is a squillion different games..

^This

FPS Multiplayer has become more mainstream at the cost of competitive play. Also a lot of the competitive scene has not moved on from games that were released 5 years ago and general interest in these games has long since fizzled out. Unless there is a good stream of games that Competitive players can move onto the whole scene gets static

Ridiculous tomahawk kills from across the map on COD:BLOPS is too random for competitive play.

consoles killed competitive play the end

every fps now and for last four to 5 years is catered mainly for console so you have stupid stuff added to make it easy to play on console but on pc it makes it even worse.

aiming movement just simple things are overlooked.

would really like to get back into comp gaming but with what ?

cod4 or cs is really only options and you are either good at both or dont waste your time.

csgo maybe a fun game will it be competitive as cs s nope . cause it still has a kinda wooly console look and feel to it .

newer players of fps also are used to the newer era and dont like a lot of older twitch style shooters. i go on some of the original cods like 1 and uo fancy a game take on newbies they just rage quit and play something like bf3 cause they can kill stuff lol .

bf series will cater for consoles from now on
next cod is black ops = no . cod after that maybe to early yet.
id will be to busy with doom4

so for atleast next two years at lans will probably still be cod4 cs and quake :(

It's because competitive FPS games peaked with Quake and 1.6. It's literally near impossible to get better balanced, more skill based games. Everything that tries to be needs to be some sort of clone. Developers either try to makes clones or sequels to these games and just can't make them as good, or if they aren't doing that they are too busy making games that are pick up and play meaning that it's not going to be competitive because everyone can play it at a half-decent level.

I'd love a new competitive FPS but when it comes down to it, it's just updates to the two games i mentioned that i'd want which developers just can't seem to do right. I don't care though because Quake and 1.6 are still awesome.

Nail on the head this,

I played Q3A for many years until the cheats became ridiculous and impossible to tell appart. I've since moved onto console gaming which is a lot harder to get competetivly into without devoting your who life too ( i cannot do anymore with a child lol)

On a COD note.

COD4 was when FPS IMO was at its best, they then tried adding too much too fast creating a different type of gameplay which ruined it for the "true" gamers.

The gamers who try and win were lost totally after WAW. MW2 was awful and games have been ever since. The gamers we have now are those sitting in a corner waiting for a kill streak who then go 50 kills to 3 deaths claiming they are the best, yet their team lost 250-0?!?

They should have kept COD4 details and added maybe new guns and maps that was all they had to do.

Nobody can really say that the shooting and ballistic mechanics of most modern FPS games have not been dumbed down. In the end of the day players can't really control recoil on consoles, and therefore the studios decide not to bother with it on the PC.

The problem with this is imo is it limits the game to a first see first kill game 90% of the time. This really limits the effect of team play when single players can obliterate themselves so quickly.

There is a large number of players that love exactly this game mechanic and try to justify it as being a more skilled game type (e.g. the huge love of hardcore mode in BF).

It's pretty sad but I'm fairly tired of beating my head against the brick wall of people's egos.

MW3 gamebattles is pretty competitive. It's not PC but it's a way to play competitively on console.

And the ranking lvl ups etc doesn't come into at all because it's played in a private match and on MW3 everything is available to you even if you are level 1 in a private match.

I'm not saying it will ever fill the void of CS:S, I myself was a huge CS:S fan and player and loved the competitive aspect of FPS but times have changed, the only reason I play on my 360 now over the PC is because the majority of my friends have it and I want to play with them, we all play gamebattles together and it's nothing like CS but it's not bad either.

You need to have balanced gameplay for a competitive FPS, COD doesn't really suit that will all the annoying perks and killstreaks. It is and always will be a good solo fps empowering the user.

Who needs a team when you've got a nuke ffs. Was hoping the new CS would fill the gap but have not heard great things :(.

Despite that Esports is stronger than ever, we have Lol, SC2 & Streetfighter all pulling in large crowds and revenue.

Some of you have missed the point of the question really, it is why has there been a decline on the Competitive FPS games on PC over the last 3 years.

The simple answer is...marketability.

The XBOX / PS3 market is more accessible due to the direct costs of buying the consoles and of course the money to be made on the sale of console games.

Let's look at examples:

- COD: Black Ops - A console game

- BF3 - Target market Console, total lack of BF3 competitive support on the PC

- CS:GO: This is a tough one, the console market in this area has already been won by the COD franchise but will they want some of the money? Too hard to resist trying?

Upcoming games that will try and fail:

- Shootmania: Most the elite FPS players in Europe got Beta invites, they will be so far ahead now it will eliminate any sort of 'normal' users because they will be dominated, creating another version of Q3 / QL

- Tribes Ascend: Looks appealing though doesn't look relatively easy to learn for modern jo, meaning it will flop.

For the record, I have been quite a high level competitive FPS gamer since UT99, playing TFC, CS Beta 7-> CS 1.6, TFC & TF2 and of course BF3.

I own both an Xbox and PC, though I only play FPS games on my PC.

By all means, I want someone or some game to prove me wrong but right now, I can't see anything on the horizon.

They make FPS games to appease console gamers now, and they aren't balanced for competitive play as they like to have their games full of stupid perks, upgrades, unlocks and unbalanced maps. The days of FPS gaming that required any sort of skill are gone too
