Asus HD 6970 possibly dying - advice please

Got a bit of a problem with my friends PC and running out of options...

Basically his dad gave him a Asus HD 6970 as he had upgraded and it's never once worked properly in his PC, constant driver crashes and recently blue screens constantly.

Hardware has all be changed - what is available for 775 socket CPU anyway, new Corsair GS700 PSU, new Gigabyte GA-G41MT-S2P mobo, new 8gb XMS 1333 ram.

Yet still the same crashing problems as when he was using his Asus P5QL/EPU board with 3gb ddr2.

It sounds to me like the GPU is dying, however it seems to work fine through an hour of Unigine Heaven on his dads PC on top settings for everything on dual monitors.

So is this actually the GPU dying? or is his QX6700 on it's last legs/suffering voltage problems?

This may not be the right forum as it's both CPU and GFX related, but I thought I'd give it a go regardless.

Any help appreciated.

Any idea what the bluescreens say? Would be a bit peculiar for the card to work fine in another PC and not in your mates, under the same parameters.

do the temps look ok on both the graphics card and processor ?

are the power connectors secure in the graphics card ?

what card was previously being run in the system prior to the 6970 ?

To be honest no, I will ask him to look back in his error logs and see what the error logs say as well.
They should give some indication of what is failing?

Very strange...however whether his dad actually had heaven running for long enough is another story.

I also forgot to mention that when he puts his older lower spec card in everything works fine...

Temps are all well within limits

All power connectors are secured

Older card I can't actually remember the name, when I can get hold of him (Ignoring my messages at the moment) I'll find out and edit.

depending on how low spec it is, could possibly be a psu issue.

any idea what setup his dad has ?

This is the thing, it was happening on his old PSU, and it STILL happens on a brand new Corsair GS700.

His dad just spends monster amounts of money on his PC, so we can expect a top of the range I7 rig with a GTX 680, etc etc.

take it he did a reinstall after getting the new mobo ?

are the old card and the new one both ati, so no chance of old nvidia drivers being on the system.

Yup, fresh install on Tuesday this week, so no chance of any old drivers hanging around.

I'm personally thinking it's the CPU, as that is a really unknown factor as to whether previously when his dad had it, as it's an extreme edition, did he stick a million volts through it and damage it.

But any other thoughts would be great.

Cheers,

does the processor have its vcore set manually or is it on auto in the bios ?

as you say, seems the obvious choice as nigh on everything else has been replaced.

Everything is set to default, so it will be on auto.

Quick update as I finally got hold of him:

Current low spec vid card - HD4870x2

Checking error logs it's consistently error 4101 display driver timeout etc
He tried switching the card to the second bios and that was when his PC wouldn't even get 1 minute past startup, would just completely freeze.

Everything points to the card/drivers, however he's tried several different drivers as well, and still happens all the time.

I recall when I first got my GTX570 and had an unstable CPU clock it would crash my gfx driver, which is what is making me think it is CPU related.

How many posts is it to get to the trade forum? So I can try and pick up a cheap Q6600 or something to test with?

Cheers.

You mentioned voltage, so I've got him to see what the voltage in cpu-z, the stock for that cpu is 1.35v however on auto it's only getting 1.120v non load and 1.2v under load.

I think this could be a very deciding factor!

could be, i'd try setting the voltage and see if it helps, there will be some drop off from the vcore set, so if its 1.35 in bios it could drop to 1.33 etc under load so don't worry to much if it does.

as for the members market, unfortunately due to some idiots its been raised to a 1,000 posts iirc :(.

Yeah, that slight drop off wont hurt compared to running it so undervolted as it is at the moment.
I'll get him to give it and try and see what happens. If it doesn't fix it then back to square one.

Yeah I just checked and it's 1000 posts and 180 days membership, getting to 1000 without spamming will take me months, guess it's ebay for me then!

Cheers.

Me again, unfortunately the CPU voltage hasn't sorted the issues which is rather frustrating.

CPU voltage has been increased to above Intel stock 1.35, now just below 4, however it's still not rectified the issue.

Several more drivers have been tested and still to no avail.
Set the +20% power in the CCC drivers to see if that helps, as well as increasing the actual card voltages too, but still to no avail.

Anyone got any other ideas that could possibly help at all? or previously experienced this type of problem with a HD 6970?

Cheers.
