WoW running really slow on ASUS EAH6670

Hi guys,

Wonder if anyone can help, when i'm playing WoW, using my Asus HD6670, the screen keeps locking up and when I change direction on mounts, it locks up again! I'm fearful that the card might not be up for the job, or it is bottle-necking.

PC Spec below:

OS: Windows 7 Profession x64
Mainboard: Asus M5A97 PRO
CPU: AMD FX-8120
Memory: 16GB

If you need anything else, please just let me know, I can not understand why this card isn't working!

Cheers

Yeah AMD CPUs aren't great for WOW compared with the latest Intel variety.

That graphics card should at least play it on Medium settings at decent FPS though.

The CPU is fine for WoW, I point my finger at software issue. You can play on ultra setting at 1440x900 with an 6670

no way a 8150 is the issue. I ran wow at 120fps using a 2009 macbook and that had a measly core2duo.

6670 isn't the buffest card either. I'd say lower your video options if that doesn't work it is perhaps a software issue.

Have you tried the WoW repair tool?

WoW is a game that loves fast cores, something that Bulldozer doesn't have (a Phenom would probably be faster for WoW).

However, it sounds like your problem is more severe than that.

Does it pause if you run at lowest graphics? if not I would start low and steadily enable different effects see if you can find a sweet spot.

What PSU are you using??

Are you using an HD6670 GDDR3 or HD6670 GDDR5??

The FX8120 will Turbo upto 4GHZ in lightly threaded applications and IIRC WoW only uses two cores. The FX8150 will Turbo upto 4.2GHZ and is similar in performance to a Phenom II X6 1100T in WoW.

i went from AMD to i5 2500k clocked @ 4.6 and my fps went from 30-50 to over 200 and that was with max settings and this was using a 6770 card

Thanks for all your replies guys, even when I run wow at the lowest settings I am still getting lock-ups. I have a 700W OCZ ModXStream Pro PSU too.

What I did notice is when I migrated from a 256MB card (old Nvidia can't remember the model) to this Asus card, that's when the problem occured. Can't do anything with it and can't figure out what the problem is at all. All the GFX settings are set to 'let the app decide' where possible and wow is set to the bare minimum, still locks!

I have tried running it at 1600x1200 and 1200x1024.

Pants!

A few things to try, first try running with the "-opengl" command line switch, if it still happens that rules out a Direct X issue. Second if you haven't already, download the 64-bit launcher for the game. Also things like triple buffering and hardware cursor have been known to cause issues for some people, try enabling/disabling these and see if there is a change.

Oh on a last note use the "max FPS" slider to limit the game to 60fps instead of using V-Sync to do it.

Edit: What AA setting is the game using? that card won't be able to handle much AA.

I have plenty of mates who play WoW on slower CPUs fine,so the CPU seems to be the least of your issues, considering you are having freezing issues.

WoW does make good use of DX11,so the HD6670 should be fine.

I have a feeling you are having a driver issue or a faulty card. What sorts of temperatures are you getting with the CPU and GPU???

SOLVED

Ran the following script in WOW:

/run print("gxApi: ", GetCVar("gxApi")) and found that wow was running in DirectX 9, changed the config.wtf file to include the following line:

SET gxApi "d3d11" and it runs like a dream!

Thanks guys :)
