Higgs Boson Found

Well on the News he said that they didn't know if the Ocean was there but now they've found it but now they've got to find the land.
So basically they found the HB but they don't know what to do with it.

I'm not sure what you getting at?
What I've read is they have high probability of finding two new particles, one of which is thought to be the HB, however they need to do more work, one that happens they then need to see how it decays, to find out more about it. At the moment the decay produces more protons than the Theory predicts. But it's such a limited stats set, that might change.
So although they have high probability, they don't have anywhere near the full story yet.

I also like this quote
Hairless primates on a wet salty rock discover a fundamental particle.

Yeah, although they haven't "found" it, they've just found strong evidence for it which they need to look at more before claiming proof. What's the problem with believing that? It makes sense. Like someone said before, they had no idea that we would be using some of the electronics they devised over 150 years ago in the ways we are now.

It is pretty much exactly the same thing.

Everything that can be invented has been invented :D

I've had a Higg's Boson sitting under my sofa for the past 5 years. They only had to ask and I'd have let them have a look.

They've found a boson, but not the Higgs Boson basically. That's the impression i got from watching the live conference this morning on the CERN website.

The final testing they are doing until christmas is going to confirm more, but, from what i saw and interpreted, it won't be the Higgs boson. I think that's why Higgs himself was reluctant to answer any questions, although asked several times, he just kept on saying " this conference is for the discovery that the CERN team have found."

I've yet to hear a reasonable answer what finding it is going to do.
Even my hero Brian Cox said on the News that it's like now finding out where the ocean is but they haven't found the land yet.
What?

What are the foreseeable things that may happen or is it a case of 'We don't know but we've found it'?

The foreseeable thing is that it confirms the standard model.

If you're asking what machines or buildings or whatever will be made as a result, who knows? Maybe nothing. Maybe a change as radical as the one stemming from the discovery of electricity. Maybe nothing until another discovery decades from now when someone puts the two pieces of knowledge together and builds a warp drive or something.

What is definitely foreseeable is that devices can't be invented without knowledge, so gaining knowledge is essential to technological development. Maybe not immediately, but inevitably.

I can see now why the lead story was Bob diamond....

In other news, a fantastic day for physics and science in general. Its just a shame most of the population don't have a clue about its significance

Are we not jumping the gun a bit? They have found a Higgs-like particle, which may or may not be the Boson. It certainly is a new particle but might not be the one they were looking for. Either way, it's a historic event and I'm so pleased that the meeting of minds has resulted in the discovery, it makes me proud to be human for once.

What they have found is a boson. Just it may not be the Higgs boson as described by the standard model.

It's definitely a boson. It's in the Higgs' predicted mass range and seems to behave like the Higgs. It could be the Higgs, it could be something entirely different or it could be a slightly more exotic Higgs than the standard model predicts. Current evidence seems to point to the Higgs, they just need to collect more data.

If it looks like higgs, smells like higgs and behaves like higgs... what is it?
