I've got an 07 320d coupe, it's got 42k miles on it and it's due a service which I was told when I bought it was the oil service.

Just been to my local BMW garage (Vines Guildford) and they've told me as it's its 3rd service it needs oil, micro filter but also air filter element and fuel filter which aren't mileage based and are just because it's on it's 3rd service.

Total cost well over £400.

My spider senses tell me thats a bit steep, I called them on Saturday and they told me £200 less discounts due to the age?

Its on BMW finance and covered on warranty until August, I don't want to risk any of that but I also don't want to be turned over.

Are there any authorised alternatives? I don't really know what the options are and googling just gets me a load of garages shouting about cheap servicing which isn't really what I'm looking for.

I don't mind doing it if it's the only option but like I say, I'd rather not pay more than I have to!

They are correct in that the third oil service is a big one including lots of other stuff - this is the downside of the Condition Based Servicing they moved to.

Call a local independant and get a quote. Then call a BMW dealer, get a quote, and ask them if they can get close to the independants price. Most will try.

Have you tried Barons Farnborough? That's where I go and find they're the cheapest out of all the other dealers in the area.

I had the same service done on my 1 Series three months ago and it costed me £246.14 (very precise I know :D)

I haven't but I'm going to try the whole phoning around thing tomorrow.

Is it even am option to have an independent do it?

Not if you have the BMW Extended Warranty, no. Besides, on an 07 car the saving isnt worth the bother of breaking the full BMW SH which is a big plus at resale time.

As much as it sucks, it's part and parcel of owning a car like this these days. If you want the extended warranty honoured, you have to keep it uptodate with BMW. If you want cheaper (and better IMO) servicing but don't care about the warranty, take it to an Indy and maybe get a 3rd party warranty. BMW warranty seems to be pretty bomb proof though. Oh, and think yourself lucky. For the same service for my car, I was quoted over £600 although it requires way more oil than yours.

yeah to be fair the thing is incredible, I've had it a year, done 20k miles at an average of over 45mpg over the whole period, this is the first service I've needed then I can ignore it again for another year.

And I need tax this month which is so cheap its basically free :)

I'll shop around and get on with it today.

I don't really understand your first post - what was the final price BMW quoted? Usually just by asking you can get some cash knocked off the initial price.

Honda wanted something silly like £420 for the 75k on my civic which is a major service, brought that down to £330ish without any real pressure. I ended up going elsewhere as I have no warranty concerns, indy at £250 but as above you'll not realistically have that option

Just remembered - this price was excluding oil as I supplied my own. I think BMW were going to charge like £77 for oil but I bought my own for £59
Can't believe they let you bring your own oil in the UK.
Here they laugh you out the door :(

"Oil to us dealers is like wine to a restaurant"

I had my E46 M3 into Vines Guildford the other week for an oil service, brake fluid change and MOT and it was £285.

When I first phoned them the person on reception did the quote and offered something silly like £150 to change the fluid alone! Phoned back a few days later and actually spoke to a service assistant and they sorted me out with everything for the above price, as you said they gave discounts for the age (they've now got 'value' services for most of the older cars)

You paid £115 for a brake fluid change and MOT then, because the M Value Oil Service on an M3 is £169.

Yup the oil service was £169, the MOT was £50 and the brake fluid was £66. The original quote was for the fluid alone to be £150.

In a nutshell, £440. The confusion was over whether it was the cars 2nd or 3rd service, the 3rd is about £180 more than the 2nd and I guess the 4th is more again being an inspection rather than an oil service.

The 4th is just an oil service. There is no inspection in the newer system.

Instead you get a vehicle check which is about every 38k and separate from the oil services.

right.. well calling round here has got me pretty much nowhere. Well, I guess down from £440 to £357 but if I go onto maindealerdiscount.com I'm being offered £231 from Ryebrook bmw in warwick.. it'd be a 200 mile round trip that I could probably include as some sort of business usage so my question would be... why not?

No reason why not. Maindealerdiscount have removed all the good deals for my car now for some reason but in January I had Rybrook Shrewsbury do an oil service AND rear discs and pads for 220 quid. The saving paid for a night in a hotel near Shrewsbury on the way back from a long weekend in Chester :)

Check it includes everything you need, it the price is for the 3rd oil service.

yeah I clicked 3rd oil service excluding micro filter. I don't know why but I'm entirely prepared to chance that sort of thing and I'm told it's not mandatory?

Plus it gets a lot of use and the air con is always on which seems to help, finally I'll possibly change in the next year or so anyway by trading it back for one with the buts I want (its a bit pauper spec) at bmw so as long as they're happy it's all up to spec when it goes back I'm happy.

just looked and there's a tick box not a stamp for the micro filter and I've just noticed both the previous services have it ticked?!
