Is the i5-2500 still a good choice for gaming?

Trying to build a gaming system on a 600 pound budget and am looking at the i5-2500 paired with a HD 7850. I know I can get an ivy bridge CPU for just a little more, but this in turn will require a more expensive motherboard and the price just keeps going up and up.

Yes it is (2500k)

But may as well get the 3570k ivybridge with a z77 motherboard. The boards are similar prices to the z68 ones still in stock.

If you don't have sandybridge already then ivybridge is what you should get imo.

yep the i5 2500 is still the cpu for gaming but get a K version so you can do a simple overclock of 4.5 (with £20 cooler)

Yep. Do this.

I upgraded from an old athlon X 4 and with the same GPU managed to see a HUGE increase in FPS on games such as dirt3 and skyrim.
