There are a lot of boxes... does that mean you get to travel at first class style on an economy ticket fare?

Depends. You get 8x "System Wide Upgrades" which offer a free one cabin upgrade on any route. So if you buy an economy ticket, you get upgraded to Business. Buy a Business ticket, get upgraded to First.
On domestic flights, if there's free space in First, the upgrades are complimentary.

The main benefits are at the airport. The priority check-in (especially at Heathrow) means that I very rarely have to queue, priority security lines are pretty swift and free 1st class lounge access on international itineraries makes the airport a whole lot less stressful.

It's also quite handy during irregular operations, eg. bad weather. Never having to hold for an agent and being at the top of the priority list when being rebooked or rerouted takes a lot of hassle out of flying.

It just makes the experience a little bit easier to bare. People who haven't experienced it tend to think there is a bit of glamour attached to the whole thing (ala George Clooney in "Up in the Air")and generally romanticise it. Truth is that it's horrible spending so much time breathing **** air, eating rubbish food and being touched up at airports. The people who hold similar status but somehow get the idea that they're better than everyone else are generally ********. I'd much rather not sit in the back of a plane so much. Up front, now that's a different story :D

Sounds like flying Business/First class for the next 12 months with all the benefits of First Class on an Economy fare to me :)

Meh. I've had the same status level on United for 3 years now. It's not as good as it sounds. Believe me, the novelty soon wears off!
