I might be changing my job soon and as you do I'm already thinking about a more suitable car.

Basically I'll be working from home, big work miles (long trips once a day rather than stop start) and will have to do a 170 mile each way trip a couple of times a month to the head office. I don't fancy this type of use in my vrs and tbh at 10 years old and having owned it for 5 years it is time to move on.

Basically something diesel that can sit on the motorway with the cruise on without giving too rough of a ride will do the job. Oh and it needs to be a hatch or estate ideally.

So to autotrader I went and I spotted that kitted out sub 4 year old Lagunas with about 50k on the clock are give away money. So forgetting stereotypes for stereotypes sake... Are they really that bad?

I heard their reliability is awful, but which generation of Laguna that refers to I don't know.

How cheap are we talking? There is a reason for a car being cheap, you just need to find out what that reason is :p.

If you are based at home and your employer is expecting you to travel large distances for work then why are you being asked to buy what is effectively a tool for your employer? Shouldnt they be providing you with a car? They are presumably not asking you to buy your own IT equipment and office supplies so why a car?

Within reason, yes they are that bad. You may get lucky with a good one or have hell with a bad one, its probably a 3:7 good/bad ratio.

Is that getting you into the first of the last models made (if you catch my drift)? They're actually a decent drive but I cant give you a steer as of to reliability

Maybe they're providing a car allowance, having said that at my last company I couldn't have done my job without a car and all I got was 40p/mile some employers are just like that.

Oh and some employers do now encourage employees to use their own computing devices for work purposes.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I kept skipping over them due to the reputation but as they offer such good vfm I thought it was worth asking the question. Even if I take the job I won't be buying until late August anyway so I'm just browsing at the moment.

Fox, no they will be providing me with a laptop and I'll claim back my stationary. As for the car, well, quite simply they are a small company and don't do company cars. They will pay me a mileage allowance for work use, whether there is a car allowance or not will become clear when they give me a contract to look over next week. At the end of the day I'd rather be paid to drive my car for work use than my current situation of paying myself to do the 50 mile round trip to work everyday.

Edit- big work miles is probably a bit misleading, and also I said long trips once a day but I didn't mean 5 days a week, more like once or twice a week.

I've had 3 Laguna's and I love them as a "car" but christ they are bad, My Last one was a 2004 model and within 1 year it broke down 5 times, thankfully I had warranty!

All Coils Failed (two occaiosns)
Key Card reader failed.
Front Springs Collapsed.
Fuel Pump Failed.
Starter Motor Packed up.

Sold it soon after warranty ran out though!

That bad that you've had 3? :p

My girlfriends dad had an R reg Laguna from new, never really had much wrong with it. Only got rid of it 2 years ago because the radiator broke and was apparently very difficult to get rid of. Was damn comfy as a passenger, speed bumps were completely negligable.

Cool story etc.

The 2007 onwards models are much better in terms of reliability and build quality than the 01-07 cars, which are a complete liability and best avoided.

It would have to be at least £2k cheaper than a similar Mondeo, and I wouldn't put too much money into one as it may prove difficult to sell. It is not for no reason that Renault have decided it's not worth their while selling them in the UK any more.

Your best bet would probably be an Octavia diesel, or if you want something bigger, a previous generation Superb.

Thanks Blueboy, going with my ideal criteria octavias start at around £9k which is too much, lagunas start at £6k for the equivalent hence why I asked the question. Tbh I think the mondeo is the best option at the moment starting at around £7k.

Like I said I love laguna's really nice to drive etc..
But it's the risk you take!

To be fair the 1st car only had starter motor issue then got wrote off!
The 2nd auto gear box failed and coil packs.
The 3rd took the risk but the warranty saved me there!

not to say there all bad, but new as possible is what I'd recommend if your after one!

They sound absolutely horrendous.
I don't care how good a car is drive, breaking down 5 times in one year would drive me insane, warranty or not!
In 7 years all that went wrong on my Micra (brother now has it) are the window would not wind up and the rear brakes needed sorting as they were catching. Each time costing 1 hour labour.
