Barcelona.

2. This one is an absolute MUST: Tibidabo, to the west of Barca, up on the hill. You will see a large church on top of the hill to the west, which you can go up to via the funicular. The views at the church look out over ALL of Barcelona, which are amazing, but even more amazing from the top of the church tower, which you need to pay 2Euros for, but it is well worth it. Fantastic place.

I believe it is this church (took this pic from the top of the pedrera). Me and the missus wanted to go but couldn't it time in and the amusement park was closed at the time of year. There is also a tall mast there which I wanted to go up for the views.

From about 6pm use taxis. The local prostitutes/picket pocketers. Just aren't worth the hassle. Especially if you on or near las ramblas.

That's it! You can get right to the top near the Jesus statue. Amazing views over all Barcelona and in the other directions. The amusement park is kinda cool, its all old-school rides. Very enjoyable. Only slight gripe is that it costs a metro ticket to get there, a further 5Euros for a tram to the funicular and a further 5 Euros to the top of the hill.

I used the metro up till 12pm quite a few times and it was fine. I was with a group half the time, but even so, it wasn't quite so bad. The metro before it closes at 12pm isn't so bad around la ramblas as its quite busy with people just trying to get home.

How long ago was that? Went a few months ago and it was an absolute night mare and really detracts from the place.

2 days ago. You are right about La Ramblas though, its rough on the night, especially to the south end. Just avoid that place. I was always travelling underneath it and so didn't see much of it. Avoid past 9pm and you will be fine. I felt entirely safe at the Harley biker convention around Espanya though, still had non Spanish nationals selling rubbish little light up toys everywhere, but they didn't bother anyone and the one guy I saw selling cans of beer there quickly got pulled up by the police and was taken away. This was in front of around a few thousand people near the Magic Fountain.

The quieter metro stations further out from the centre contain a few rough drunk individuals though...

This is what i told someone on another thread

i stayed over in feb for the Valencia CF vs Stoke city game,

Was cheaper to fly and stay in barca for a few nights than stay in Valencia

Flights were £35 and it was MUCH cheaper to rent an apartment, much more social we went ina group of 5 so it was great to have our own building to mess up and destroy :D

i used this website and stayed on the las ramblas http://www.feelbarcelona.com/en/

I wouldn't stay there again though, Its VERY VERY seedy at night lots of crime and prostitutes. Had an amazing time even though we lost. Hope you enjoy it

i used this site for apartments, If your in a group i cant reccomend enough how much better renting an apartment, is and its cheaper) http://www.feelbarcelona.com/en/

For night life we quite enjoyed a nightclub called razzamataz, Amazing women in there but the locals didnt take to kind to English people being there. Taxis are cheap in barca , Get your selft a T10 metro ticket and use the metro very straight forward

Cheers for the bump Physichull. I'll heed the advice about Las Ramblas, and also planning on buying a money belt for my passport & cards.

Now for the warnings:

1. Barca is pick pocket central so gaurd your posessions at ALL times. Particular areas to watch out for are on La Ramblas and the surrounding Gothic Quarter and Segrada Famillia. The small streets, tourists are a magnet for people selling **** who will be looking where you keep your wallet. Areas which aren't too bad are around Espanya, the art gallery and Olympic stadium and the castle.

Although pick-pocketing can be rife in most big cities, I'll echo this as it's the only place I've ever experienced it. My GF had her purse pinched from her bag at the train station, and her Dad was almost a victim at the same time (coordinated attack) but realised what was happening and grabbed his bag back.

Font Magica
Park Guell
Sagrada Familia
Las Ramblas

There are some nice apartments for that many people in Barceloneta, where the beach is in Barcelona. You can get a train ticket called T-10, which gives you 10 trips on the underground and train within the zone you're in. It's about 7 euros I think.

I'm doing exactly this when I go in Oct. I can't wait. Might have to buy a camera, a good one, before this... :p

Pretty much what has been said:

Nou Camp
Sagrada Familila
The naked old man of Barcelona (Google it)
Magic Fountains at Plaza España (nice place to sit on the steps and booze at night)
Beach
Las Ramblas (La Boqueria Market is stunning with all the colours)

Everyone mentions crime, which I'm sure is justified, but if you're relatively careful you should be fine. Also those beer/drug selling Africans can be a god send. Couldn't care less where they store them, but when you're far from a shop (magic fountains for example) and want beer, their beer bringing magic comes in handy. As for clubs, most hostels seem to head down to near the beach.

Not quite sure what you mean by that, but if you mean a "bum-bag" then I wouldn't recommend that.

It's a belt/pouch that you wear under your clothes and only access in private, like in the toilet of a bar etc. It's basically a way of concealing your money in a way that can't be identified easily.
