Flab jab to tackle obesity

Scientist have developed a 'vaccine' to obesity.

The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to attack a hormone that promotes slow metabolism and weight gain. In tests, obese mice fed a high fat diet saw a 10% drop in body weight four days after receiving the jab.

Am i the only person who is desperately hoping that human trials of this prove to be unsuccessful? I can just see now all the 'celebs' claiming how great they look since taking the jab, and it becoming the next 'must have' thing for teens etc.

Although this is not it's target audience, its obvious that this is where it'll end up.

Secondly, I have little time/respect for those who put on a lot of weight and then expect to lose it by not changing their lifestyle (ie surgery, at present) and even worse expect the NHS to sort them out for free.

(Before i get flamed here there are obviously exceptions, people can be forced to eat, and become dependant, others may suffer from clinical depression and turn to food, my point is regarding the majority who just eat too much and exercise too little)

Frankly what you're wishing for is nasty.

Do you want condoms to stop working? We have sex these days primarily for pleasure, why do you want people to be unable to eat primarily for pleasure?

Let me guess - you're not fat and you don't want other people to benefit while you don't?

Edit : Yep. Of all the nasty posts from nasty posters I've seen on GD this pretty much takes the biscuit. No personal attacks rule means I can't express what I think about you.

yeah and i wish medical care to be taken away from car crash victims too. They know the risks when they sit behind the wheel.

And don't get me started on disabled people... Waste of space.

TruffleShuffle, very apt name btw lol, this is a step forward in medical science and understanding and with what is perceived as an obesity epidemic at the moment something like this was always and should happen.

Im pretty sure there's already loads of similar, to some extent, drugs already available.

He's not saying they cant eat for pleasure, just that
1) It shouldn't be the tax payer that picks up the tab
2) The eater shouldn't believes they can dissolve all responsibility for being a porker

disclaimer... rare exceptions in some cases blah blah

I get what the OP means...many people could obviously benefit from this, but perhaps they could learn something by having to make the effort to lose weight, and therefore feel incentivised not to put weight back on again. This way, you could put on a load of weight, have the jab, lose weight, put it back on, rinse and repeat...

I welcome the development but I'm still depressed at the inability of humanity to control this issue through will-power and education alone.

I'm depressed that humanity resorts to warfare rather than peacefully work out their differences.

And depressed people too they need to get a grip rather than take a happy pill.

Well some folk can't help their weight due to medical reasons, no matter how much will power and education of diet they have.

Can.....worms.....everywhere....

And that is a tiny proportion of people in reality, nothing what so ever to do with the obesity epidemic hitting the western world.

Quite surprised by how quickly people have managed to completely skew my viewpoint.

I'll ignore the car crash and disabled comments, they're just plan ridiculous.

I'll address the sex one though. The example would only be the same if you have 10 children, then expected the state to care of them whilst you went on your merry way disowning them. (and continuing to have children).

To use the condom analogy. Condoms are not 100% effective, are you saying that if you wore one and still got someone pregnant, becuase you wore the condom you are now free from all responsibility? You were only having sex for the pleasure, and now you don't want to take responsilibilty for your actions?

Obesity is not an illness (again in the majority of cases), it is a simple matter of personal responsibility. I am not wishing that a cure for cancer not work, i am simply pointing out that this 'jab' is another "get out clause" for people who do not wish to take responsibility for their actions.

I think you just have a really strange and twisted bigoted view of the world sir, what ever demons are eating you up inside you should get rid of them and just get on with your life.

If it worked it would be as common a supplement as multivitamins guaranteeing the entire world obesity free. The health implications are huge on national scales. See the bigger picture.

Humans are rubbish at will power regardless of what it is, exercise, smoking, eating, tidying the house, washing the car. The list is endless as nothing that "must" be done is actually pleasurable and everything that "must not" be done is great ;)

Does this have to be injected straight into the blood stream or can it be taken orally in a higher dose? im thinking add it to all KFC/BK/MC/etc by law lmao.

Assuming it has no side effects, it's great news.

If it's cheap to make - the amount of money saved by our health services (globally) as as result of "curing" obesity would be incredible.

While it's nice to say "well, they should exercise" it's not that simple.

Everybody has different metabolisms, everybody responds to exercise differently - personally, I've had to follow a very strict diet & exercise long & hard to lose any weight at all & I'm pretty much at goal.

But another could be slugging away for a year & have only got half as far as I have, second to that an individual could have lost loads of weight by simply cutting out chocolate.
