I will be getting my business card made - just saw the name card of my predecessor in the drawer. John Smith BSc

WHAT?

Who does that? I can understand when it comes to Phd or something but Degree/Masters? That just sounds stupid. On another note, the only person that I know that ends his email with Bob Robert MBA etc is a reknown D-bag around the office.

What's the opinion with regards to this then?
I am definitely making sure my BSc do not end up on my card!

I'm not too bothered but for some people its quite and achievement and so its something that they are proud of, so why not have it on their cards :)

It's something that's only reduced recently because the degrees have devalued thanks to all the polytechnics magically becoming universities in order to make the higher levels of education more available to the masses.

Getting a degree used to be seen as an acheivement... :(

I only know one person within a few years of me that uses it and he uses it on facebook

I have no desire to use it. My dad does but i guess a degree from back then is worth significantly more.

Depends on where you get the degree from... unfortunately this nomenclature doesn't work if you tag the name of the institution on the end.

Degrees from red brick unis are still worth the effort...

I actually have a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from an excellent uni and will therefore actually use it. Just because some people think it looks stupid, doesn't mean I don't value it.

My degree got me a few letters from the royal statistical society, so if I want I can put
Desires BSc (Hons) GradStat

I think, not even sure if in that order or not, I've never used it, they're things you'd mention in your CV, i.e. having a degree and being a member of an official body but imo you don't put them after your name because it's not the done thing anymore. I really wish it was though, I'd love to have business cards with all that stuff after my name and also not look like a **** :p

What about Chartered Engineer? I'm starting an engineering degree this year and hope to become chartered one day.

Obviously you would use that lol. CEng is essentially a PhD in engineering but from the real world.

The reason you don't put BA/BSc (and even MA/MSc sometimes) on the end of your name is because so many people have them. If you have something which actually sets you out from everyone else then your put it.

Colin, in civil/structural engineering, everyone has their credentials on their card as it is the norm so I would not bat an eyelid at seeing BEng/MEng/BSc/MSc/CEng/etc underneath someone's name and job title. All our work supplied cards have them, as do all our email signatures. Just had a look at the cards I have from other companies I've worked with and most of them, whether they are architects, QS, specialists, whether they are based abroad have something. Personally, it's great to be able to relate someone to their level of expertise.

Currently I've only got MEng, but looking forward to the day I can have MEng CEng MICE because it will be a huge achievement.

Granted, it depends on what you will do with the card. If they were for your photography business, then putting BSc has no relevance unless it was in photography, but if it was for you main job and relevant, by all means put it on there.

I think the minimum acceptable qualification to flaunt say on a business card would probably be PHD ( you can also call yourself Dr yay :) ). Too many people have Undergrad and Masters degrees these days so it isn't seen as such a big deal nowadays.

At one time not may people went to University, and if you weren't one of the Eton brigade and from an average background, then only people who had the ability to study a rigorous academic degree went. Now it seems every man and his dog goes to Uni, and the degree has been devalued. You see universities all over offering degrees in Film Studies and Cultural Studies which are unlikely to get you anywhere.

I'm Canadian, and in Canada the trend for large amounts of people going in to higher education started off much earlier then here in the UK. It has got to the point in Canada where a Masters degree is the minimum acceptable qualification for many jobs.

Not trying to offend anyone, and If I have then I apologise. Thought i'd give my 2 cents....
